nasty to puppies
« on: August 20, 2020, 03:30:41 PM »
hi all,
I have a 2 year old male cocker spaniel who has recently started to be nasty to puppies.he is fine with older dogs and people.I do not want this behaviour to continue or get worse as it is not acceptable . I would hate a dog to be like this with a puppy I had.I usually walk him off lead in countryside and he is good with recall but am now thinking i should keep him on a lead incase someone with a puppy is nearby.
wondering if having him castrated will help.

Itís unlikely to help.  Heís transitioning to being an adult dog and possibly just doesnít want to be bothered by young dogs.  Itís a human trait to believe that all dogs need to be socialised at every opportunity!  Yes, in their first 6 months of age but after than they donít need to and some donít want to!  We have 5 cockers, only 1 will will tolerate strange dogs coming up to her but equally, sheís not really been exposed to many and my guess is she will soon tell them off if sheís doesnít like it!

I think its also because pups can be unpredictable and they just don't want one jumping all over them (Boz had a 6 month old working cocker jump all over his head once despite me telling owner that Boz had just had a major eye op and was onlead too, and then my dog went for pup - woman walked off and said I hope he's better behaved when he's feeling better - how dare she and how would she like that if someone did that to her after an op or to her dog) - its up to puppy owners to make sure they don't do that to dogs they meet and don't know too.
