Early morning awakening getting worse
« on: June 03, 2024, 07:44:32 PM »
Hi

Advice please!  After years of my 2 boys sleeping downstairs, we have got to the point (along with the behaviourist) that they will have to sleep in our bedroom.  One or both are waking now regularly around 4.45am and it’s not doing me or the 3 other adults in the house any good at all.

It’s pure SA with one of them and the other one is heading that way more and more.  Really I’m asking for advice about how we go about this transition to get us more sleep (at least until 6.15/30).  Much appreciated as we’ve been struggling for a long time and they’re not puppies.
They are 7 and nearly 10!

Hi Hayley, how strange, I was just thinking about Benji today and wondered how he was getting on - we have a few problems with Humphrey at the moment and, among other things, were considering how we could go back to him sleeping downstairs again, as he did before his op, instead of in our bedroom, the main problem being the stairs and the fact he jumps on and off the bed, which is very risky with his back. Don’t know if you‘re all on one level but if not, it might become a problem for them both later with stairs and once they’ve enjoyed the privilege of sleeping in the bedroom, its hard to go back.
Humphrey‘s also becoming quite restless at night now (probably pain, see my post yesterday) and wanders around the bedroom which disturbs us, if Benji has similar problems, then you’d be no better off..Faced with the problem we have now, if I was in your position I think I‘d be inclined to try and find the reason for them suddenly waking up so early and disturbing each other. Would separating them be an option?
Sorry not have better advice, I can only offer food for thought  :shades:, but hope you find a compromise (and some sleep!)
Love to the boys and tail wags from Humph‘  :luv:

Oh dear Jayne - poor Humphrey!   Just slept 2 nights downstairs with them and around 4.45am Benji’s awake!  No particular reason that I can work out.  Anyway, we’re moving out for a month whilst downstairs being renovated and the dogs will have to sleep in our bedroom in the new place for a month.  We’ll keep them in their beds but will have to carry Benji up and downstairs last thing at night and early morning.  Benji’s got a skin infection going on too on his back (started antibiotics yesterday) so that’s not helping him either besides his IVDD problems.  We have thought about trying to separate them but we won’t have the rooms to do that with our new downstairs layout.

As far as Humphrey is concerned, we use a step for Benji to go up and down onto their sofa.  Just wondered if that would help Humphrey up and down onto your bed.  Hope you’re getting somewhere with the pain management?

Hugs to you and Humphrey x
