New pup and 9 year old
« on: June 08, 2025, 05:45:38 PM »
Hello,
We brought home a new pup on Thursday having recently lost our  nearly 14 year old boy. I?m just really anxious about our older dog and whether her reaction to the pup is normal. My husband says we just need to let them sort themselves out but I don?t want her to hurt the pup. She has times when she tolerates him and seems interested, sniffing him and walking past but if he looks at her or takes the initiative to interact she growls and barks, sometimes lunging towards him. We are keeping him on lead at times to stop him bouncing in her face. On the flip side they have sat each side of me, heads sharing my lap with no growling from her.
I think I?m just worried as she?s so much bigger and I don?t know what is a ?putting him in his place reaction or if it?s more than that. She is very much herself, sleeps on the sofa in the same room if he?s napping, toiletting when he?s out in the garden too (on his lead).
Am I making too much of this-do we just let them get on with it? Thankyou-I?m probably overthinking it but want to get it right. It?s also very early days I know-only his 3rd full day with us.
