Skinners kibble and our rescue
« on: June 10, 2025, 03:05:55 PM »
Hi, not posted for many years! Can anyone offer any advice/thoughts/experience please??
Recently adopted a rescue working cocker who came to us on Skinners kibble, she weighs 9kg and is on the thin side. I?m feeding her the amount recommended by the fosterer and the back of the Skinners packet. Am wondering if she has a high metabolism, so should I just up the quantity or would it be better to change her to another brand - been looking at Barking Heads, Pooch and Mutt, Lilys Kitchen. When I start researching it?s such a minefield 😵‍💫. There doesn?t seem to be any dog food for putting weight on, find myself going round in circles about what to do. Any advice?
Many thanks.

Can't help with putting weight on, but I used Barking Heads for years, when Dylan was a pup, he thrived, and now he is 10 (today!) he has been on the senior kibble and wet food, and it maintains his optimum weight, and he likes it a lot. I have a feeling they may have a food suitable for your wee lass?

I feed Rupert (2 and a half), Tribal wet food (sausage) mixed with some of their cold pressed. He weighs 9.3 KG and is quite a lively little fellow, but seems to stay at the same weight. He does Rally ob. and agility as well as walks and fun in the garden.

I have put the link to Tribal for you to look at at your leisure if you so wish.. https://tribalpets.com/uk/dog/   :luv:

Miss Molly, now 18 months old is so skinny,  doesn't matter how much we feed her she will not put on weight .  Currently she is on Pooch and Mutt health and digest (well over double quantity), their digest supplement, their wet food for supper licking mat, their treats and chews.    She is super active, her coat shines beautifully and poops more than acceptable.  As a puppy we had chronic tummy issues and Pooch and Mutt  suited her so we have stayed with them. We can't feed her our foods except toast and cheese ( poor girl) and we do not allow others to give her food because of her delicate belly.  We do wonder if people think we don't feed her  but  the vet is happy .
Run free and fly high my beautiful Gemma

What makes you think she is on the thin side? Working cockers tend not to carry weight, if they do, it is usually a sign of illness.  Seeing ribs is ok, back bone and hips should not be visible.  My best working cocker is 9Kg in weight and has retrieved twice her body weight - she is fit, strong and well.
