over night stay for dog spaying question

Firstly don't panic Harry has not turned into Harriet.

Mum in law cocker poo is just over three and my nieces presented her to Mil as a present last summer.....later found out she had not been spayed so Mil is in a panic about it all happening this coming Tuesday.  Basically she doesn't understand why they want to keep her overnight!! Thinks its about making more money (after recent TV )..her sister has certainly but doubts in her mind.!!

The vets are the same as I use and are still owned by the old founder along with junior vets.  I have told her that I believe it is because they are a 24 hour manned vet( few and far between) and it is old school and more likely to want to monitor etc.

Never ever owned a girly - am I right.

I need to reasure her....plus the little girl Daisy has captured our hearts and Harry's

Three of my Scottie?s were spayed (two had pyometra), but it was so long ago I can't remember if they were kept overnight. I would certainly be happy about a bitch being kept in, it's a big operation, and the dog is in the right place should they need a bit extra TLC or monitoring.

Don't know about current procedures for bitch spaying, but is she a small dog, that may make a difference and a need for more patient care.

My previous girls and my present girl have all been spayed.  The older ones by the traditional method and Maisie by keyhole.  None of them have stayed in overnight.  I took them early morning and was able to collect in the evening.
All of them were able to walk out of the surgery.
They are usually a bit groggy the day of the spay and your vet may be extra cautious.

Thank you all.....hubby has gone to his Mums this afternoon to have a chat....I have this awful fear that she does not understand fully the operation, Daisy is insecure and has made a wonderful adjustment to her new home ( I don't think she spent much time indoors previously and had 2 litters and was sold on).  But she is a delight and I am as nervous as I Mil about this. She is so precious follows Mil everywhere, just wants to be near her.

My other concern is she sleeps upstairs in Mils bedroom next to the bed in Harry's old pen.  She would be distraught if left down stairs at night and Mil is in her late 80's and not sure if she could carry her upstairs after op.  Hubby went with Mum to vets when Daisy first arrived - but this spaying came out of Mil taking Daisy for annual booster.

Would there be any possibility of MIL sleeping downstairs until Daisy?s fit again? We had to do that for a few nights  with Humph after his back op until everything settled down. Trying to carry her upstairs would be a bit risky for all concerned I?d think, ( I was repremanded from the vet for carrying Humph incorrectly!  )
As for staying overnight, I?d imagine Daisy?ll be pretty groggy after the op anyway, she probably won?t be too distressed about the separation, but I can empathise with your MIL, we were both distraught about leaving Humph for 10 days, it was awful.
When Humph was castrated it also involved searching for the missing undescendes testical but it was done by keyhole and healed pretty quickly, so if Daisy?s lucky enough to have it done that way the recovery shouldn?t take too long.

I will tell her to speak with vet when collecting Daisy re lifting etc.

I do worry about him to be honest Julie, he does seem to be struggeling lately, walking in the snow last weekand was a real challenge and its hard to know whether he?s in pain or not, he?s looking old,( although 10 for a cocker isn?t really a great age). We?re debating whether to try another vet, ours is lovely and good with Humph? but I don?t get the impression he takes me seriously and I always leave the surgery with more doubts than when I went in.
He?s become very clingy (Humph, not the vet!  ) and isn?t happy at all when I?m paying too much attention to our grandson, who?s just walking, I don?t believe he?d hurt him but he gets stressed and I have to watch them both like a hawk. Can?t believe where the time has gone, when did my active fun loving pup become such a couch potatoe? .  :'(

Jayne it is so hard to see them get older and sadly Humph has a long standing problem along side.

Finding the right vet is a challenge (so costly over here) I would ask folks if they can recommend others and give them a try.  The snow may weigh heavy on the legs, Harry went for walk in thick snow and it was like small snow balls clinging to all his legs - not happy and hubby and I holding him up to get then off - not a Happy Harry.

Can't offer any advice on the grandchild ( congrats ) but little Daisy snapped at my nieces 18 month old - he had pulled her tail, MIL was shocked but my niece saw what happened and said she should have been more careful watching the little boy.

As for being clingy...Ollie became that way as he aged.  Reassurance from the their humans.

I must admit I grew older with Ollie and Harry sometimes challenges by energy, but he seems to realise Mum needs gently care where as Dad can take the 3 year old cocker action!

Well the little lady has had her op....vet rang y'day and asked for her to come in at 8.30am (hour earlier) and they rang at 3.30 pm and little Miss Daisy is home....Mil says she was moaning but now fast asleep, hubby asked if she would like me to pick them up to bring to ours as bungalow - but Mil insisted will carry her upstairs.

The vets said to phone anytime even after surgery if worried so I think that is why she wants to stay at her home as just close to vet.
