Newbie!!!
« on: February 27, 2006, 10:35:19 AM »
Hello! After spending a few weeks just reading and 'lurking' on COL, I've finally decided to sign up today, mainly because my OH and I chose our little puppy yesterday and I want to show him off!!!! We've decided to call him Rudy and I've attached a pic - (hoping it works)!!!! He's only a few hours old in this picture -  and I just can't wait to bring him home in 8 weeks time.

Anyway I just wanted to say hi - Im looking forward to being distracted one too many times when I should be doing other things!!!

Caroline (& Rudy)

Hi and welcome to COL. It must be very special to see your pup so young, but I must say that I though most breeders wouldn't allow it quite so soon. Aren't there some dangers?

Anyway, I hope you will really enjoy Rudy, and look forward to seeing more piccies as he grows up.

Welcome to COL  Your breeder must be very brave to allow people to handle new born puppies so soon - Mum must be exceptionally tolerant too unless of course you are part of the breeder's family perhaps and she already knows you? There is certainly a risk in allowing strangers to handle new borns which is why most breeders wouldn't allow it but I'm guessing Caroline isn't a stanger - hope not anyway ;) Good luck with Rudy - he will change out of all recognition over the next few weeks which is always fascinating to watch.

He's so tiny

The next eight weeks will seem a long time, so spend it getting everything ready and reading helpful hints.....Like you find here at COL ^_^

He'll have changed dramatically when you see him next, unless you are close by and see him often.

Hi ya, my my what a little bundle you have there!!!

Welcome to COL, I have two blue roans Milo and Nancy :luv:

Goodness me you must be so excited, I don't think there are many of us who got to see our puppies sooooo young, for the reasons mentioned above. I know I wasn't allowed to visit until the pups were 3/4 weeks and even then we had to wash our hands and be extra careful.

The 8 weeks will fly by I'm sure xxxxxxxxxx

wow! that is a new babe!!!  we chose jarvis at 2 1/2 weeks (breeders are friends -  we weren't allowed to visit sooner) and spent the next 5 weeks worrying that we had chosen the 'right' dog personality/dominance wise as he really was a little blob.   fortunately we were more than convinced at our 4 week old visit when his personality (laid back, happy and a little submissive - but not timid) was emerging (and his markings/looks!), and were very pleased we hadn't changed our mind to the little bitch who turned out to be over confident and feisty (depends what you want in a dog and if you can cope with the more dominant and stubborn versions!)

long winded comment to really say, you may want to change your minds when you see them develop and become little dogs.

whatever the outcome!  can't wait to see your bundle grow up, and welcome! ;)

helen & jarvis x

Thank you to you all and hello  :D !! I was a little concerned about handling him so young but the breeder assured me it was fine - she's KC registered and has been breeding for years - I've met 'mum' and 'dad' and her countless other cockers and they're all fantastic dogs - all just wanting to give us cuddles, they're well socialised and all beautiful!!!

Our breeder is keen for us to be involved as much as possible and we can visit as much as we want whenever we want - Im so looking forward to bringing the little chap home!!!

But how do you go about choosing a puppy when they're only a few hours old? We have trouble choosing when ours are 8 weeks old ;) Hopefully your breeder did explain that pups don't start showing their personalities until they are 4-5 weeks old and even then they can change - we've had apparently timid puppies turn into total livewires in the space of a few weeks  I'm glad you're happy with your breeder but allowing strangers to handle newborn pups really isn't the norm & would be contrary to most experienced breeders' idea of good practice. It's good your breeder is keen for you to be involved - this will give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions, check whether the breeder does the recommended health-screening tests etc.
