A quote from my son aged 16 when I tell him not to feed the dog bad stuff

"Mum, he eats shit and rotting corpses, I am sure an apple pip won't hurt"!

Woody is a sod for woofing up potatoe peel if I drop any. Pepsi jumped on my lap for a cuddle last weekend and suddenly stuck her nose in my vodka and coke  ph34r I think she was enjoying it because we had to prise her head out of the glass  ph34r Woody has had his head in OH beer if left unsupervised. Oh dear oh dear . . .

You know I am sure there is a list out there of foods that are bad for humans, and they would include chocolate, cake, chips, meat, alcohol and all the other things we eat... I have a vet friend who told me that she sees more dogs 'poisoned' by pizza than by chocolate (in fact she has never seen a dog sick from eating chocolate, because most people know not to give them a bucket-full of the stuff, but the corner of your chocolate biscuit going to your dog will NOT do any harm!) My dogs would forage in our orchard and eat apples - peaches and nectarines. In the vegie garden strawberries were a favourite. My sister's dog once found a pile of fresh horse manure - she ate half and rolled in the other half. It was fatal - she died 10 years later...

I'm kind of an expert on poisons since our beagle almost killed herself eating stuff as I did fall clean-up in the garden.  Many of you know daffodil bulbs are poison, but ALL of them are very dangerous, depending on the size of your dog and number ingested.  Acorns are also toxic, even though squirrels eat them happily. Don't let your cute little pal snarf down anything in the yard, period.

The suicidal Beagle also loved cherry tomatoes.  One night I was putting up a lot of them.  When one rolled to the floor, she'd inhale it and beg for more.  So I gave her quite a few.  In the middle of the night my husband slipped down the stairs on a horrid ocean of diarrhea - our poor Nelly had been dreadfully sick.  It was awful to clean up, but I felt much worse thinking of the misery my poor dog must have been through. Just don't assume that what is good for us is also good for dogs.  We know cats can't take aspirin and dogs can -  many seemingly harmless substances are deadly for our beloved friends.
