Can anyone stop a 'domestic'????
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:48:15 AM »
OH had cockers when he was gowing up - thats why we ended up with Daisy - I wanted a dog he wanted a cocker.  Well we have hit an 'issue' - Daisy's coat!!!!

The hair on her back is flat and sleek and she has 2-3 inch feathering under her belly and about 1 - 1 1/2 inch feathering on her legs.  She often has bits of the new forest stuck in her which we sit picking out of her when she is sleepy.  She is not great at being brushed but is getting better if persuaded with cheese

Anyway - our 'issue' OH wants her clippered all over for the summer  ::) :o ::)  (like they used to do one of his dogs when he was a kid ) I really dont want to as she looks lovely with her feathering but it is a bit of pain as she is such a bu**er about being groomed  ::)

Does anyone have any idea of a compromise?  I would like her to look like a spaniel not a clippered 'oddity' but I dont know what to ask the groomer to do to her??

OH - one word - NO!!!!!

You could explain exactly what you wantto your groomers, slightly shorter feathering etc but no shaving! My groomers are great (now!) and listen to my instructions fairly accurately!

ok...this is from the woman who has a dog with puppy fluff elbows so is definitely not a grooming maestro...but couldn't your groomer do a major coat king and thinning scissors job on her feathers??

PLEASE not the clippers, it makes them look so odd...and grows back so strangely (worse!) too.... :luv:

tell oh i'll clipper him too if he gets ideas about daisy ;)

If you do decide to have her clipped (which I don't think you should do, by the way ;)) then ask for the coat to done in a show trim. That way they will leave the feathering and basically clip the bits that are hand stripped in a show dog. You could also get her feathering cut back a bit so they don't pick up so much crap. I have had Vegas groomed this way since he was neutered and he always looks very smart

I have Molo done like this (is this a show trim, Gill?):

His chest is shaved, his armpits (?) are cut really short and his feathers/feet etc cut right back, but he still looks like a cocker :) Its really easy to manage as long as its done every 3-4 months, too  :D

Not at all - I'll have a look later and see if I've got any from other angles, so you've got the whole *look*  ;)

Thats kind of the look we go for with Daisy, but maybe not quite so short - we keep her a bit more girlie!!

Thinning out the ears and feathers makes a real difference. Daisy's paws take about 30 seconds each to dry at the moment as they are so big and hairy!! This goes down to about 3 seconds a paw once they are groomed!!!!   :005: God, I'm sad!

I have a friend who has her 2 cockers the way Gill describes.  Much like Molo's but with the leg feathering and skirt left a bit longer than his.  They always look very tidy but still look like cockers instead of sheep ;)

Jessie was spayed at 6 months and for an orange had alot of coat.

She is now a wooly mammoth and a nightmare to groom however we take her to the groomers and they clip her head, back and neck and thin her feathers out...she looks OK...not an nice as a stripped dog or even a coatkinged one but she passes for a cocker...ill try and find a pic of her...

It wont be the one where she came back looking like a goat tho...they shaved the front and sides of her legs and left feathering at the back....that was weird!!

Heres a pic of Jess after one of her 1st trips to the groomers...lovely!!  :luv:
