Carrying puppy out before vaccines... and Hello, everyone!
« on: December 30, 2006, 01:03:52 PM »
Hi all, this is my first post, I am looking for a bit of advice, or shared experience...

Our puppy has been out in our back garden, and transported in a crate in the car to visit 2 other houses a few times, and the vet once. We have started introducing him to his collar, and will the lead, next.

I would like to start preparing him for the outside world, especially as we live near a bypass with fast traffic, and I have noticed that when he hears a motorbike go past, from inside, he pricks up his ears and snifffs towards the window.

I have read that some people carry their dogs outside, and I would like to do this, perhaps carry him out along the route we'll take him for his first walk along the street.

-My concern is that he wriggles A LOT.
-Any methods for keeping him still in my arms, or indeed, my lap?

First visit to the vets I couldn't keep him still, and although he 'sits' when on the floor, it wasn't happening on the vets table, too much to explore. The vet said I would need to practice holding him still… he is very good at wriggling away, or even reaching down to your fingers or round to your wrist and snapping at them to get free. I pick him up the way the breeder showed me, so I know it’s not pain he feels; he wants to be free. In the car, he wants to be out of his travel crate and exploring, climbing up me to chew the hair on my head, wriggling to get on the floor or into the boot..

i can't imagine him sitting on my lap on a bus.
I worry that he would wriggle out on my arms and onto the outside floor,  but i also worry that he will not be prepared if we don't go out.

Would really appreciate anyone's experience with this, very much x

Hi, and welcome to COL  :D

I carried Coco out and about as soon as I got her - I am convinced it was a major help in her socialisation.  She now has no fear of traffic, people, bicycles, joggers, children other dogs etc etc.  I just put a collar and lead on her and carried her in my arms - she was not too wriggly but if she did wriggle she was still quite little anyway and I just held on tight :005:.  Your little boy (what is his name?) will need to get used to it and hopefully will settle down a bit - it is all just too exciting I know! You can carry a toy or some treats to get his attention back to you ::)   I think you can even get a puppy pack thing which is like a baby sling they can go in.  If Coco got cold or tired though, I just strapped her round my body with a scarf or put her down my jacket!!  :005:  Good luck - it is worth it in the end!  The sooner they are socialised the better and more confident they will be  :D

Oh, and by the way, we will need some pics of your poopy - they are the law round here  ;)

I have carried mine down to school to socialise them with people and get them used to the outside noises, but I usually have girls and they tend to still be light enough to carry in my arms but I also had a boy this time and he was considerably heavier than my girl, so I bought a cheap doggy bag and used that. You also have the added security of being able to clip the collar to the bag, but saying that even if I carry the dog I always loop some fingers through the collar incase they decide to be wriggly. :D

We carried Louie out from the time he arrived at 8 weeks, took him to school and let everyone make a fuss etc, he got heavy toward the time he had his jabs but positive he was much better for the effort.  He enjoyed all the fuss and going out in the car didn't become only when going to vets.

We also found that different vets seem to have very different ideas about how soon they can go out after jabs.

Not sure whether we took too much risk but it worked for us and Louie's a sociable outgoing pup unfaized by most things now.

Sure there will be far more experienced views too though.

And photos please..

Charlie was a wriggler and a screamer (Still is) but i just took him out a few times in my arms - collar on - lead attached and wrapped around my wrists , i also wrapped a blanket round him like a swaddled baby - partly 'cause this made him calmer and partly to to stop him scratching me in the struggle to get down  :005:  i found he calmed down at times and had a good look around and loads of people would come up and say hello - i think it did him good :D

How quick was that!!
Thank you, fantastic! I will try the blanket think, it will procted me from the claws and bites, put i think it will be good at keeping him in place too. If he still wriggles, then I think he will have to get carried in the carry crate, not ideal, but at least he will be near the traffic. Will get his collar on again this afternoon and try the blanket. Aw, how cute are they :-*

I need to give my husband his lunch, then the dog, and I will be back to post pictures shortly, thanks again. And he is called Chester x

I don't know if you can still get them, but Argos had a small soft crate that was on offer, theres a link on here somewhere, but although Louie soon outgrew it, it was good for taking him out in where we could put him down and give him cahnce to look and smell around him.

I now use a backpack for pups when socialising them (top-opening rather than those that zip round sides to top) and a harness --- I put a towel in the pack and wear pack round the front and the harness helps as its something to keep hold of

Even managed to carry two lab x pups like this (was fostering them for rescue)

Welcome to COL Moll & Chester!

I also think it's a good idea to carry a young pup around; I took Domino(our cocker)around the local park so he could meet lots of people, children, other dogs etc. & also stood by the side of busy roads to get him used to the volume of heavy traffic.

That sounds like a really good idea - I carried Spike (our lab) around the woods & it nearly killed me; it's amazing how heavy a 10 week old lab puppy becomes after about half an hour!!

Hello! Welcome to COL!

We carried Winston out and about when we first got him although he started to get really heavy towards the end - we went round the local lake, park and to the garden centre - he didn't wriggle too much and i think he apprecieted being able to see the outside world a bit!

That soft crate thing from Argos that was mentioned we use as his crate away from home when we go visiting and whislt he's small he goes in it in the boot when we travel - he loves it and it gives him a place of his own we were are at other peoples houses - its not terrible dog proof and has been chewed a bit but still useable for now. look forward to piccies of chester  :D
