blimey... if the crate thing didn't work its because you didn't use it properly - you gave in, don't worry we all do I had to learn the hard way. Make sure you've check for the following:
Has puppy been to the loo? pups go lots of times and need to go soemtimes when they have only just been, use a key word to pee and poo will help in the long run.
Is she warm and comfy? cold dogs will cry fair enough so would i
I crate train mine from day one and its a no nonsense approach now. I use a large crate that I can have a bed in with a puppy pee pad so that if she needs to pee she can, her bed has a nice warm rug in it but NOTHING that can be chewed like those foam filled ones, those thick bath rugs have been the best I've found so far. All my pups have a teddy of one description or another usually one that can be heated so that they have something to cuddle up to bit like their litter mates (they soon lose the need for it).
My dogs at night time get covered with a blanket it serves two purposes 1) keeps them warm free from drafts 2) acts like a budgie to keep them quiet and gives them a nice safe den. One thing I don't do is go back to the crate once the cover is on - its fatal if you do because your training them to whine eg 'they whine, you come' its self rewarding simple really. The soon learn that whining does nothing for them and they stop it. I'm not too big a meanie though my dogs go to bed with a kong or something to chew on (ice lollies in the form of ice cubes or bits of frozen fish or meat are good below 6 months helps with teething pain).
Good luck I hope your sleepless night improve.
