8 Week old cocker spaniel
« on: January 10, 2007, 03:55:44 PM »
Hi we have just welcomed our new cocker spaniel girl puppy in to our home,we also have a 16 month old springer spaniel girl. We let them meet in a neutral  place they got on fine.We have been letting them play together the springer keeps nudging the puppy quite hard with her nose sometimes making the pup yelp, also when we pup in her basket the springer trys to nudge her about and also claws her with her paws,it seems to be getting a little rougher the last day is this normal behavior or is it some kind of warning sign.? ::)

I don't quite understand from your post, are you putting the pup in the springers basket or her own? Do you have a crate for the pup?

All this newness will wear off, pupies are tougher than they look and she will soon learn to stick up for herself then you'll have the opposite problem and your springer will be running for cover!

Very normal behaviour, like children will poke a new baby when it comes home, given a few days and they feel as though they have been around forever.

Good idea to get a crate to give everyone a rest from time to time.

Hiya,

Ive only got the 1 doggy so dont know that much but from what I have learnt on this site is it's completley normal try not to worry to much. I think your springer is just showing your pup whos boss thats all like Lourisma said puppy's are tougher than they look, they will soon be best friend's  :luv: just make sure you pay them both attention and show your springer that it's not just her now but she wont get any less attention.

Hope this helps and enjoy this special time.

Scooby did this with Misty when we first brought her home - he would follow her around nudging her.

We did have a crate for Misty but (after perservering for 3 nights of crying) we ditched the crate and got her her own bed in the kitchen near Scooby.  At first, he kept nudging her out of her bed with his nose and then when she was out he would firmly sit in it.  So then I put her in his bed and he would do the same thing - he just didn't want her in either bed and was showing his dominance  :D

Now, however (Misty is now 4 months old) he isn't the slightest bit interested and they stick to their own beds normally.

What are you doing with them at night-times?

We used the crate in the same room as the older dogs bed when ever we were not there to check all was well, ie when at work and night times.  They could see each other but you knew that if it did get a bit rough you were there to intervene and if you were out, the pup was out of potential harms way.

Although the crate door is always open now, (they still sleep in different beds) but if the pup gets a bit too bolshy, then Jasper puts him into the crate by barking at Louie or nosing him in, and I swear he shuts the door on him but haven't yet got video proof.

Ben is scared stiff of Bella.........I think she's bitten his ears too many times  :005:.........she steals his food, his toys...even when they're in his mouth..........poor Ben just lets her get away with it...........she's only been here a week and she already rules the roost!!!!

Thats exactly how it seemed with Jasper and Louie.

I was starting to get worried that I had done the right thing, especially as Jasper lost his 1st home for plaguing the old dog they had, but Jasper might of stood for it for a while, and Louie seemed to be boss as 8 weeks, then things gradually changed and 4 months later I'd say Jaspers back as the boss, not saying Louie does push it sometimes though.
