So far so good.
« on: January 30, 2007, 11:21:30 AM »
Hi everyone. Well things are going pretty well with Sasha, who joined our family on Saturday. I was a little worried as she hasn't really had much by way of socialisation and hadn't been introduced to children, but she came straight in and put her head on the legs of my eldest son (I had made them all sit on the floor) and, typical cocker style, clearly adores them already.

Her crate is in the kitchen breakfast room, which is the busiest room in the house. She happily hops in and out and the kids know not to bother her when she is in it. We haven't shut the door at all and give her the run of the room at night. She has a little night light and I come down to let her out in the middle of the night and at about 5.30pm to let her out. We have had next to no wimpering but the toilet training is, of course, very hit and miss. I'm not using training pads as I am keen to get her outside when she wants to go, but I may change my mind.

She is a little nippy and can bite quite hard, at least from the children's point of view. I keep offering her various chew toys but toes seem to be preferable at the moment! She tends to be under your feet quite a lot, which is a bit of a problem for my 6ft 4in husband, who is at risk of either stepping on her or falling over her.

Pics will follow when I can figure out how to do it. I may have to wait until OH gets home to help.

Hiya

Glad Sasha is settling in well :D

One thing that did cross my mind when I read your post is that you say you are not shutting the crate door, even at night, and are giving her the run of the room, so why are you getting up in the middle of the night and early morning to let her out?

I haven't used crates for either of mine, and like yours have the run of the kitchen at night.  I just put newspaper down by the door and left them to it until 7am.  Scooby was fully toilet trained by 4 months and Misty is now also fully trained (at 5 months).  I just think getting up in the night is a bad idea as she will get used to it  ;)

Obviously, if you are shutting your pup in the crate at night you would have to get up  ;)

Anyway, good luck and get posting those pics  :D

Bless her for loving your son so much, Maudie was 6 1/2 months old and had been kept outside with other dogs for the start of her life we have had her 8 weeks now and she has had such a bond with my nine year old son from the word go. He is so gentle with her and she loves him to bits!
She was also hit and miss regards toilet training but I let her out every 2 hours or so and praised her loads when she went. we still get the odd accident but usually down to my own stupidity TBH.
As for getting under your feet LMAO this is cocker styley and wont change  :005: they want to be loved and want to be with you all the time so I guess your feet are as good as any place really. Enjoy her she sounds lovely but hurry up with the pics!

Benji is the same...we let him out often during the day but put newspaper down in the evening.!
Although he sleeps in our room (I know but only way we could get any sleep!) he goes downstairs to toilet.

He's been with us for 4 weeks now and we're nearly there.  All overnight toilets are on the paper and 9 out of 10 times he'll ask to go out during the day!
The only times he does go indoors during the day is when we've taken too long to get him out there!!

But I have to admit that it took us a good 2 weeks to realise his routine and when he needed to go so that may take time.

Re the mouthing, obviously all puppies do this as their teeth are coming through.
We asked about this at puppy training classes and were given advice to introduce bite inhibition.
Basically, he needs to learn what is, and what isn't, acceptable.
So all the time he's gently mouthing we let him carry on and as soon as he goes too far we have to yelp really loud like a hurt puppy would and ignore him for 3 minutes.
He picked this up really quickly (although apparently it can take up to 6 weeks) and never bites too hard now.

Worth a try, it worked for us.  But the whole family has to agree on what you will and won't accept.
You can test on each other by pinching hands!!  :005:

Sorry, yes, she is an orange roan and coming up to 9 weeks. I have my hands full at the moment as the plague has settled on our house. Both my sons are currently in bed with colds/tummy bugs/fevers and DH has hobbled into work feeling sorry for himself. So far, daughter is okay but I don't rate her chances of getting away with it. So, not as easy to watch what Sasha is up to all the time with toilet training. I'm not sure what to do now as getting up in the night isn't any real problem as I tend to wake up anyway and fall straight back to sleep again (plenty of training having had twins). But I take the point that she might get too used to me appearing in the night. It is a bit of a pain not knowing where she has peed but she ignores any newspaper I put down.

Also, I think I should be shutting her in her crate every now and then. I had to do it this morning as we were in and out of the kitchen with cough medicine etc and she was getting under our feet. She was desperate - crying and biting atthe bars. I couldn't bear it and let her out - which I am sure was a mistake. I need to read up on crates and toilet training again, I think.

But she is a real poppet - very loving and clearly enjoying all the new experiences. I have one of those dog carrier bags to take her out in as it will be another three weeks before she can walk outside. It's lovely seeing her play with the kids too. Can't wait until we can go out for real walks.

By the way, Sasha is a man's name as well - got the idea from one of a friend's many ex-boyfriends!

I have been thinking of using a crate when puppy comes along yet I never did with Meggy she just had run of the kitchen the advice is always mixed on getting up during the night to small pups.. some say you should never let them cry for more than so many minutes.... others are, don't go down or you will send them a signal like... Wow that worked lets do it again. I think hubby was probably saying to me don't you dare or you will be sleepin in the kitchen with her.Your potty training technic has certainly worked tho.
