Im so proud of her!
« on: February 01, 2007, 01:57:58 PM »
:D I Decided even tho I feel awful that I couldnt miss puppy training last night and im so glad that I didnt. We were asked to show what we had learnt so far and guess who had to go first!
So I started with heel (without a lead) to sit, followed by wait then recall to sit and my god she was fantastic! It is only our third lesson and I am so proud of her! :luv:
Now though we have to teach her to shake a paw in fact left then right by next Wed????? any ideas is it just a case of repeating ourselves again and again and practicing or is there a trick???? ::) doubt it

Take care everyone
A happy Tracey and Maudie xx

Well done Maudie.  :shades:

For shake hands I just lifted the paw and shook it, saying 'shake hands' as I did it and treating. After a few goes I tried just giving the command - Jimmy caught on straight away, took a bit longer with Misty but she got there in the end. I'd hold my hand out towards the paw I wanted them to shake, then once they'd done that I'd say 'other one'- at first I'd gently tap the paw I wanted them to raise.

Good luck !  :D

Well done - clever girlie  :D

For "shake hands" you could start with a treat hidden in your hand and then click and treat when she lifts her paw - gradually shaping the behaviour into a "shake"  ;)

:D :luv: What a smarty pants

I did the same as what Colin did to teach shake a paw...I found it to be the easiest to teach (other than the simple sit, stay, down commands).  Now whenever I try to teach her something new she puts up her paw..and then her other paw ::)

I taught Kali to give a paw but now when I say sit, she wafts her paw up and down in front of my face before I can say anything :embarassed:

I did the treat hidden in the hand too - I was teaching high five (purely to interest the teenage daughter in dog training) :005:

Ben tried to snuffle the treat out and got frustrated so bashed my hand with his paw - that got him the click and treat  ;)  He is now a bit more refined but doesn't know what paw will get the treat - I don't think it would take that long to teach if she is food orientated like Ben  ;)

I taught Alfie 'paw' by lifting his paw and treating him at the same time. He picked this up in about 10 minutes so after a few days of practising this I let go of his offered paw and immediately lifted the other one while saying 'other paw' and treating him. Again he picked this up super quickly and now does it without being asked if there's a treat in the offing. He practically hops from one paw to the other  :luv:

Are you using a clicker? This can help to make things clearer... and quicker!  :D

What a superstar, we have been going for weeks and still cannot master heel!  We do do paw though but she has got it into her head that if she does Paw, she can get anything!  You obviously have far more brains than the pair of us.  Well done!

congratulations!

You dont need to use a clicker...you could just use a click word e.g. 'yes' and release the food from your hand to signal to her that she has got it right?  I teach my dogs that if I signal with my right hand it means left paw, and if I signal with my left hand it means right paw.

Good Luck!
