Blindness

Bailey is 7 and 1/2 months old and deaf in one ear little love.  I dont think he is blind but i do think that there is something wrong with his sight.  When i throw the ball or chewy he seems to sniff his way to find it instead of looking if you know what i mean.  He sets of running for the ball then goes past it or totally the wrong way :huh:  Is this just a puppy thing like my OH says and the fact that he is immature and still a baby.  imagine this........i will try to explain what i think his eyes are like......bare with me, i know im paranoid about him :005:  Imagine his eye being halved in two horozontilly and he can see out the bottom half but not the top half, cause when i thro something he sort of looks up but see's down ::)  I hope someone can understand what i mean, i know its difficult the way i have written it but its the only way i can describe it ph34r  Sorry for being a bit thick  :005:

someone will come along who can offer much better advice as i have no experience in this at all, but all i can say is that barkley's eyesight appears to be fine but there have definitely been times when he has been searching for a toy and completely missed it. on these occasions his nose is to the ground so i assume he is trying to sniff it out rather than look for it, and that's why he can walk past the toy- sometimes almost treading on it- without seeing it.

hope this makes sense! if i had real concerns, i would consult with a vet who's opinion i trusted. :)

If you are at all worried, then it's probably best to take him along to the vet to get his eyes checked out  ;)

Eyesight is not a dogs most dominance sense though - Molo often misses where a ball is and runs right past it; and he can never work out where it goes if it rolls between his front paws  :005:

Agreed - I think I would take him to the vet if only for your own peace of mind.

Domino is the same as Molo; he has run past & lost countless balls on walks. ;)

I have a similar problem with Bayley who i found out had eye problems the day before i got him.
He copes really well with what we believe are cateracts or trauma brought about by rough treatment in a prievious home.
Been for his check up today and although he does not seem to be any worse we have decided to take him to see a specialist to get the low down once and for all.
He is such a special dog and I want to do anything I can to help him.
If you are worried then a trip to the vets is essential and they may refer you as well.

thankyou, yes i think i will make an appointment at the vets and ask opinion, when we thought he was deaf we took him to a place in Chester to have him checked out so i guess it might mean a trip back there, but needs must,  i hope he is ok and is just a little bit scatty :005:

There is an eye specialist in Preston I can pm the details if you are interested in seeing him. He's very good, I go to him for the eye screening under the KC/BVA scheme.
