First season question...
« on: April 26, 2007, 10:04:18 AM »
Could I please ask when would Poppy be allowed off her lead after her season has finished?

She is in her 11th day of bleeding, does the bleeding last a full 3 weeks?

Is she finished when the bleeding stops or does she still have to be on her lead after that?

Soz for being vague...but I am... ph34r Poppy is our first dog, I did call in to ask at the vets but he was out and the one of many receptionists that was there was as vague as me... ph34r

The bleeding only lasts for the first part of the season - it differs from bitch to bitch but often between 10 and 14 days the discharge will change first to a pinkish colour and then colourless. It's at this point that the bitch is at her most fertile - although having said that, it's not unusual for a bitch to bleed for 3 weeks right through ther fertile stage. Length of seasons vary from between three and and four weeks - so it's difficult to say when Poppy will be ready to go offlead again I'm afraid... you'll have to play it by ear... checking the swelling of her vulva, also maybe running your hand down her spine to see if she still swings her tail. Even once the swelling has gone down and she stops swinging her tail, you still need to be cautious about letting her off lead - it can be quite difficult judging the end of a season.

Thanks Colin, so glad this will be her one and only season!
That said, she hasn't been that bad and not that messy. She has however decided to think she's a husky again and pulls like mad! And now she won't poo in her own garden...she has too go out!
