Grass Seeds - What are the signs?
« on: July 18, 2007, 11:11:17 AM »
If your beloved has a grass seed is it obvious?  Since being a member of COL I have been paranoid about Fern getting one of the dreaded things in her ears, eyes, paws and fretting constantly.  A couple of times last week and then yesterday evening she was scratching at one of her ears a little bit but only for a short period and not constantly - she is walking and running about normally and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort - so am I worrying about nothing?  I've had a look with a torch and it looks like there could be a blob of wax - if a seed had gone down in would she be more displaying more unusual signs than the odd scratch? I worry about her constantly, but don't want to pay £25 for a vet to shine a light in and tell me there's nothing wrong, yet if there is something in there I would want it seen to.  Any advice would be welcomed.

When Bailey had his one, he was shaking his head every minute or so, and also hanging his head to the one side.  After reading about grass seeds on here, I knew exactly what it was, and was able to get him to the vets straight away.

That's just my experience of them though  :-\

If they get a seed in their ear they tend to tilt their head to that side, and with feet they can often favour that foot and not bear weight on it.
There are plenty of threads (unfortunately) on grass seeds, you might find more info by doing a search.  :D

Hiya Michele I've done a search and most people seem to have experienced the head tilting etc so I was hoping that this was the case I just wanted to make sure before I just left it, in case it is a seed and gets worse.  Everytime she shakes her head I get the torch out!  I wish she could speak!

As you said she had a bit of wax maybe she just has a slight infection?  When we took Fenn in to have a seed removed in her left ear, the vet said when he looked in her right it was a lot worse, waxy wise so gave me some anti biotics just in case of an infection.  After they ran out and from joing this website, I have been using that Thornits and her ears are clean, except for the odd blobs of whiteish wax, which I guess the Thornits pushes up and is easy to wipe away.

Have you tried Thornits??

And not wanting to worry you but when Fenn had the seed she didn't tilt her head - well not that we noticed?

Scoots has just turned 2 and this week has encountered his first grass seed in the ear. Again, through information on COL I was able to identify the problem straightaway - he was shaking his head (quite violently)and tilting it to one side. The offending item was removed under sedation on Monday and he is as right as rain now.
Scoots' ears were particularly waxy and he was shaking his head periodically anyway, before the dreaded seed incident.
Hopefully, Fern's loopy lugs are just a tad waxy.

When Oscar had his grass seed in his paw, the first sign was a slight limp. Then he kept licking his paw and finally he was walking on 3 legs! All this happened within 24 hours!! Vet has suggested using clippers to keep the fur very short between his pads as apparently the seeds often sit in the fur and gradually work their way into the foot.

Thanks for this - this afternoon I looked on a website for Thornit as I'd remembered seeing it on here and it described the symptoms of ear mites, one of which is biting the feet - which Fern has been doing - so I am hoping that is her problem.  I've ordered some Thornit and I put some stronghold flea treatment on her today which treats mites - the last flea treatment we gave her was frontline for the threat of ticks, but this doesn't cover ear mites which might be why she's developed some.  I do hope this is the case and we are not harbouring a grass seed.  :'( (Edited to correct spelling mistake)

Ben had grass seeds in two paws but didn't limp at all - he did pay a lot of attention to them though !  I pulled out seeds and some had started to imbed themselves  :o  I thought I'd got them all out  - but no   He had two ops to find the seeds (cross fingers and paws that the 3rd check up next week pronounces him fit  ::) I thought I'd post this as there was no limping or change in his activity at all - just almost 'habitual' licking of the toes  ;)
