She wees in the night

Help!

Skye (6 months) is doing really well with her training.  She is house-trained during the day - but sometimes she still seems to wet or dirty the floor overnight.  She isn't in a crate - should we try this?  She doesn't ask to get out in the early hours, but it's horrible to come down to in the morning.  It's quite unpredictable - some mornings there is nothing - others there is a yucky surprise in store!

Any advice?

I'm also looking forward to hearing any advice - was going to post something very similar myself.

Hope you don't mind, skyesmum, but can I add a bit to your query?
Is it harder to get a dog used to a crate when they haven't been in one from the start? Heidi is 10 weeks and we have her 2 weeks.

Good question!

Skye goes in a cage in the car and has done since she was 8 weeks - and she has no problems with it - but is it too late to crate her at night now?

Heidi won't be able to hold it all night yet, Callie can only just and that's between 11pm and about 7am she is 14weeks so Heidi will have a while to go yet.

Sky however should be able to hold it, what time schedule is she on for sleep time? is it regular or not? Not sure about crating dogs as I'm not a fan and Callie isn't crated.

Thanks for all the info Aearoniel. I'm not sure about crating her either. I've put one by in Argos for OH to pick up on his way home (a reaction to this mornings findings more than anything) but hate the idea of her having to relieve herself in the crate if she can't get out. Decisions, decisions...........

If you crate her make sure you go down at some point in the night to let her out and relieve herself so she doesn't have to do it in her bed. Callie went to bed at 11pm and went for her break at about 3.30am each night then slept through to 7am before the next one. Just because Heidi is in a crate doesn't mean she isn't going to have to go in the middle of the night. :D

Are you withholding water after a certain time? If not, perhaps you should try and see if withholding water works. We've been quite successful with Nell, who is just 14 weeks and is managing to go through the night without needing a wee.

Skye goes to bed at about 11pm each night.

Last proper 'walk' is about 9pm but she gets out in the garden before she goes to bed.  I'll try taking her water away to see if that makes a difference.  She always does a wee at bedtime - but needs another one in the night.  Maybe i should just get up at the crack of dawn and let her out - then again, I don't want to commit myself to doing that forever either......  ARRGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Perhaps even getting up early for a couple of weeks and then letting it go longer say another 15mins for a couple of weeks and building Skye up to the whole night again may help out, going back to basics?

sam is just coming up to six months. we now know with sam that if we get up at 6 (now problem when a 4 year old is up anyway!) he goes straight out for a huge wee and poo! if we wait til half six, seven there is almost def a wee. leave it til have 7 and you'll find a poo too :005:.

i don't mind getting up as i'm up about that time anyway but if connor sleeps out i still set my alarm to let him out then go back to bed :shades:

My puppy is crated at night. He is 9 weeks old and sleeps from about 10:30 to 5:30 in the morning     (wakes up because he hears hubby get up for work). Today, because everyone was lying in he slept until at 6am. He does wee in his crate( he has a box in there to sleep in and a papered area) but never poos. He doesn't wake me to go for a wee in the night.  He now goes through the night without a poo. I know you are not suppose to let them wee in their crate but Cody seems happy with the arrangement. He is house trained and never messes in the house unless I put paper down for him while I'm out. I think crating him was the best thing we did it has taught him to hold himself and to go when we let him out. Everyone has different opinions and I'm sure all dogs react differently to situations but you need to do what you feel is best. If you're not happy about using a crate at night then don't because you will only fret.
Hope all works out whatever you do. Remember this site is her for people like us to ask for advice. Let us know how you go on.

I was having the same problem with my nine month old Charlie! We seem to now have got into some kind of pattern now though - he will bark at some random hour of the night and i'll come down let him out, he'll do a wee and come back in - then not a peep or a wee till the morning! I'm not sure if this is what other people have done but I would much rather be waken at 4 in the morning then come down to a wet floor and have to get the mop out  :P

UPDATE!

Skye has been crated for the past two nights.  She actually likes going into her crate - I think she feels 'safe' there.  (she was never crated at night before)  Anyway, she whines at about 6am and I let her out and both mornings she has done a wee and a poo in the garden!  Success!  After she comes in, she goes back to sleep for an hour or so.

I think we'll just keep going with this arrangement and see what happens.

Thanks for your help everyone!   :-*
