Approached for a stud dog
« on: September 17, 2007, 12:44:50 PM »

I have been approached a few times now by people asking if they could use Baxter as a stud to their bitches.

I wouldn't consider it for a number of reasons (health, puppy homes etc), but additionally Baxter isn't registered and from what I can ascertain, neither are the bitches.

What worries me is that these people have chocolate bitches and are wanting chocolate puppies so are looking for a chocolate stud dog..

Surely its not the best idea in the world to mate chocolate to chocolate??

You can mate Liver to Liver but could get some lighter than required eye colour etc. Depends on the pigment of the dog in question and also what colours are behind them.
These people obviously see ££££££££'s  which is really sad  >:( FWIW Liver is one of the genes that seems to have a high % of PRA carriers/affected. Mating a dog is NOT as easy as it sounds, believe me  ;)

I can imagine!  Baxter strikes me as being a bit like Boy George.. in that he'd rather have a cup of tea!  :005:

Thanks for the info.

My last boy used to have phantom pregnancies, he'd make a nest then collect all my sons cuddly toys and fuss over them and sing to them whilst gently turning them over and moving them around in the 'nest'.. bless him  :luv:

I've had the owner of a Golden Bitch a couple of weeks older than Dave (blue roan) approach me and ask if he can be her stud dog when they're older. I was gobsmacked, so much so I couldn't even explain why not properly..  hoping she asks again so I can give her a full lecture  :005:

Dog owners eh?  ;) :005:

What REALLY bugs me is these people have no idea.....all they want is puppies with no consequence of health, temperament etc  >:D

It got me really cross too, the one that approached me had an 18 week old bitch and wanted a litter from her because they think she is really 'special'. It's her first cocker and I'm no expert but love watching the breed and there are already things about this dog that I don't think show the breed off to it's best and to 'decide' it's worth taking a litter off your dog at that age is just ridiculous. She has no real idea of what her temperament will be or what her confirmation will be when she's fully grown. I suggested that if she was serious she went back to her breeder to ask about a suitable stud dog when she was older and when I asked what pedigree lines the dog came from and she had no idea either. Also, again I'm no expert but surely you wouldn't mate a solid gold with a blue roan? There is no way Dave is fathering any pups.. WHAT'S MORE... prior to this cocker pup she'd re-homed a 1 yr old cocker bitch that died about a week after she got it so she's experienced first hand unwanted badly bred cockers... silly woman.

When Milo was staying at OH's mum's over the weekend she was approached and asked if he could be used as a stud dog when he was old enough (he's 4 1/2 months).l  >:(  Apparantly the man came up to her, asked if Milo was a cocker spaniel, if he was entire and could he use him! He said that 'everyone seems to have their dogs done and I want my girl to have a litter'!

When she told me I was sooo angry and went off on one for a while, I have to say. Aside from the STUPIDITY of it what about the pure CHEEK of it?!!! There are hundreds of stud dogs out there and I'm sure if it was anything more than a whim he would have been in contact with the owners of these dogs and I can only come to the conclusion that he was refused on the ground of being a nit-wit or he didn't want to pay the stud fee and thought he'd go for any cocker he came across. H  >:D

When Molo was coming up to a year old, my FIL suggested that we offer him for stud - to make a bit of money  :o :o

After I had picked myself up off the floor, I counted to 10 and asked him where he got the idea to pimp my dog from  :shades: It turns out that he had been watching Crufts, and there was an film-article about a stud-dog owner who one of the presenters went to meet.

He had assumed that because Molo was a pedigree, from a breeder that showed her dogs, then he would be in demand as a stud and we could "make our money back on him"  ::) When I watched the episode myself, I have to say I could see how how he got the idea - there was very little discussion about responsible breeding, and no mention of health screening  :-\

I lost count of the number of times I got asked at various game fairs this year if I would offer Alfie and Rodiadh at stud. Needless to say the askers got a mini lecture on irresponsible breeding but I also wish I had some way of letting them see what Alfie was like in his full on 'challenging' phase and asking them if they really want 6 or 7 mini versions of that running around   Not one of them EVER asked me about his pedigree, health status or working ability. Rodaidh gets asked about because of his colour and because 'he's so pretty'  ::)

I thought like colour and like colour were a good match for breeding??

Roxy comes from a chocolate and white mum and a chocolate roan dad? Is that not good then?

I m a bit confused about mixing colours..I think it is not recommended to mix a solid with a roan as markings may be strange..I know of a blue roan with orange patches..I should imagine that would spoil any show potential....Some people sure do have a NERVE! this smells of rogue breeding..bet there must be some cases of extreme heartache for those who dabble in this market..and lose their beloved pet and/or pups! ..guess it sounds like easy money.. >:(

Not necessarily ;). I have 2 chocolate roans who are the product of a Clear to Carrier mating. I have just had them Optigen tested and both are Normal/Clear :D

Yes because you did a mating from 2 Optigen tested dogs, so were only going to produce A's or B's in that litter. What I meant was people who had dogs tested when Optigen first came out, now it won't be the case as people are making informed decisions based on the testing available.
