Puppy grooming
« on: September 28, 2007, 08:25:27 PM »
OK, here we go.......... so far I have been brave enough to trim my puppies paws and to comb her every second day. I also cut out all hair from the inside of her ear. She is now 15 weeks of age and the only thing she does mind is when I cut the hair on the inside of her ear. Can any hair be taken away from the top of the ears yet or the totally useless hair behind her ear? How often can I bathe her safely as I do take her to ringcraft classes weekly and she finds it amusing to get herself covered in all sort of sticky things that she can pick up in the Garden:)
Which shampoos and conditioners should I use?

I would say just whenever she needs it, because as you say; as soon as they're clean they find something disgusting to roll in so it'll be a never ending circle.  :005:

Ozzy who is 6 months has only had a couple of baths (enough for him to get used to the idea) using a mild Teatree puppy conditioner and he does fine.

You have a beautiful girl there by the way. Lovely photo.  :luv:

Thank you for your kind comments on Lucy. It is mainly her tummy that ends up black (literally) and of course her ears that she loves to dip into anything oily..... ah well  - and she keeps finding this sticky stuff in the Garden that all my other dogs managed to avoid in the six years that we have been living here. Most of the visible residue I am able to comb out  but her coat still feels sticky even if it looks nice.

wow she is lovely! so beautiful, I wish Callies ears were that long, hers still look really short (she's 17wks) does trimming help them look longer?

I did not trim Lucy's ears at all. All I did was cut out the long hair around the inside of her actual ear part so that I can see if anything gets stuck and to assure that plenty of air gets to the inside of her hair. The long hair at the top of her ears makes her look a bit like Lady from Lady and Tramp:)

Re shampoo: Jesse (American Cocker) gets a bath every one or two weeks. I use human shampoo for shiny hair (Elvive at the moment, have also used Pantene and Tresseme) diluted and the human conditioner. I get excellent results.

Vera do you use any grooming spray's to keep them cleaner for longer afterwards? Also how do you guys stop the ears from looking totally un-groomed within minutes of them having been groomed?

Wowwwww what a beautiful girl. :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:

You need a snood to keep her ears nice. ;)

I do have a snood but I can hardly make her wear one all the time:) Also if I combed her, put a snood on, drive to ringcraft and take the snood off her ears look like she has dipped them in grease again. Surely that cannot be right?

If you intend to show her you should try and handstrip the top of the ears, this can only happen when the puppy coat is ready to come out at anything from 6 months to 1 year old.

I use Ice on Ice Grooming Spray which says it repells dirt amongst other things.  I get it from here  http://www.hubintsecured.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000099.cgi?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2ehubintsecured%2eco%2euk%2facatalog%2fP_index%2ehtml&WD=ice&SHOP=%20&PN=Chris_Christensen_Grooming_Spray%2ehtml%23a498#a498

That was recommended on the American Cocker forum by an experienced show person and its really good.  She also recommended Pantene Ice Shine Shampoo and Conditioner which I was staggered by at first, didn't think you were supposed to use "human" shampoo on dogs. Well she knew what she was talking about! Morgan coat and skin has never looked better.
Sam is mum to - Sapphi (working black Lab 5 1/2 yrs), Max (Golden Retriever 4 yrs) Morgan (American Cocker 2 1/2yrs) and mum in spirit to Barney (English Cocker 3 1/2 yrs now living in Scotland)

Hi there,

thank you very much. So I will stay well clear of the scissor to ear temptation and will shop at H.U.B. and Boots. Has anybody ever heart of the KW range by Karin Winter? Apparently it is a Danish shampoo and according to a friend of mine who breeds Cocker Spaniels in Scandinavia the best he has ever tried? I could not find it on the net at all.

Greetings,
Stephanie
