Bloomin' Pheasants!
« on: October 18, 2007, 05:15:11 PM »
....just tramped halfway across Wiltshire this afternoon, after a very excited (and VERY selectively deaf) working cocker girl who managed to put up 3 pheasants, about 20 yards into our walk  >:(

....... gonna stick to tracks and parks for while i think, until we get more "control"  <hollow laugh>

you've got about 6 weeks of this before the pheasants start to thin out - first shoots this weekend I think?

At least you didn't have a dog trembling and trying to get into the telly, around the back of the telly and outside cos the pheasants must be SOMEWHERE (the pheasants were on screen in the Alan Titchmarsh programme  ::) on bbc1  :005: )

They've started to let off fireworks around here already  >:(  but it is quite funny because every time Alfie hears a particularly loud bang he immediately drops down and looks around to see where the bird is going to fall  :005:

blimey, shes getting us both FIT! I think thats the problem, we were both a pair of couch potatoes 3 months ago (albeit she never really wanted to be, but shut in a kennel 24/7 does tend to do that to a girl!) but I cant beleive how far I can walk now without getting puffed - and she will go on all day!!  She gets so thoroughly excited that if we are not moving for some reason, she runs round and round in circles, just full of exuberance :D

Someone at work has given me details of a gundog training school nearby, but I honestly cant afford it just now .....

No need for a professional trainer in the early stages. Just get some good books and you can get things started on your own. Since the season is getting underway you could go to some trials and shoots and see if it's for you.

that'll be doubtful around here in wiltshire...too many working dogs, not enough shoots...we can't go beating this season, our shoot has a waiting list for beaters and dogs.

go join NOBS if your not a member already again you might have to travel but its more than worth it.  If not why not ask if you can do some dogging in for them??

I travel miles for my shoots, in fact I spend more in fuel than i get paid but its worth every minute I'm in the car :D

NOBS???  ph34r

National Organisation of Beaters and Pickers Up  ;)  Although I've been a member for nearly 2 years now and have yet to get an opportunity of beating or picking up through them  ::)  Good thing I'm already sorted here!

really???  I had lots of work before I got booted off the site for 'bad' behaviour... I did find though that alot of it was word of mouth and it does depend on who your area rep is.  I also got alot through my college on work placements and other peoples shoots.

If you haven't had anything from NOBS and are still looking give the area rep a swift reminder...
