Eyes after Cataract Surgery (Updated)
« on: December 12, 2007, 01:54:46 AM »
Hi all,

I would love to hear from those of you whose dogs have had cataract surgery - for how long have your dogs been on eyedrops afterwards, or are they maybe still getting some regularly?

The reason I am asking that we have had sort of a conflicting experience with Jerry's right and left eye, respectively.

He had his first surgery on the right eye in January, was on eyedrops until about 3 months or so afterwards, and ever since they eye has been great, no redness, does not require any more drops.

Then Jerry had his second surgery in July on the left eye. The surgery itself went very well and the eye healed very fast. But even though we have reduced, over the last months, the eydrops to one or two drops a day (Prednisolone and Flurbiprofen) it just seems that I am not able to take him entirely off them. The eye is still sensitive to, for example, exitement/playing/when he's tired, and easily turns red. This eye just seems a lot more sensitive to these factors than the other eye. I am starting to wonder if he might have to stay on these drops, if needed, for a long time or even a lifetime? The eye vet does not seem overly concerned, and I have only been communicating to him over the phone (never get to speak to him directly, it's always through the assistants ) and have reported to him how Jerry's eyes are doing every few weeks, but he doesn't want me to come in again. Also, is anyone aware of possible long term side effects of these eyedrops?

Any thoughts/ experience-sharing would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Petal had a cataract surgery at the start of October, her drops stopped completely at the end of November, so just 2 months in total.  It was just the eye gel and anti-inflammatory, we were told to continue those just to help dissolve the stitches on her eye.

Something going on with the eyes today (Just read Beth's and Trevor's posts...)...

I woke up this morning to find Jerry's left eye totally red and inflamed, it was so swollen that he could barely open it  :'(  Actually, it had looked really good over the last few days so I had skipped yesterday evening's eyedrops. Big mistake. Anyway, I immediately took him to the eye vet (this time they agreed to see me  ph34r) - fortunately it was "just" inflamed, so nothing catastrophic going on (I am always so worried about glaucoma / retina detachment etc), and the bottom line is he will have to stay on increased medication for a while. But the vet is still optimistic that he will not have to get eyedrops for the rest of his life.

So actually I'm relieved. The eye looks much better already

ellie had a large cataract removed at a year old in april 2006,we have had to use optimune oitment in her eye twice a day ever since, her insurance has covered it up to now, she has a yearly checkup in feb, so we will see then whether she will still need to carry on with it,at £38 a tube, it doesnt go far, eye has been good condition throughout, you need to follow your vets instuctions.

Just an update (if anyone's reading  ::)) Today at another check-up at the eye clinic it was found that the cause of the continuing inflammation is that there is some "lense material" that remained after the surgery which has "proliferated" and is now causing some renewed opacity of the remaining lense. Plus, he has some scar tissue (cholesterol deposits) that formed post-surgery as, basically, scar tissue where the cataract was taken out. Both phenomenons are very rare (congratulations, Jerry  ph34r). In the best case scenario, the opacity will dissolve by itself in 6-12 months (vet expects that), otherwise he might need another surgery  :-\ :-\ to clean it out. As to the cholesterol deposits, those may have to be "lasered" out at some point in the future  :-\. Oh well, I better start saving money again  ph34r ph34r. He will also have to stay on 3 eyedrops a day for a while....At least the other eye is doing very well, and the retina looks fine on both sides.
