« on: January 24, 2008, 02:35:44 PM »
i do i little hunting and was wondering how old does your cocker have to be before you feed him on rabbit phesant pigeion etc? #
at the moment i eat 95% for myslef and just give titbits now and again as a treat
but if i wanted to use as a feed how is best to prepare for a dog meal etc?
cooked as normal?
raw off the bone?
cooked on the bone?
any parts to keep them away from?

thanks

Not sure when, but I would recommend raw on the bone or cooked OFF the bone as the safe way to go (cooked bones splinter and cause injury, raw don't usually)

I think there are a few experts around so they will probably be along shortly!

I dont feed my lot game as their main diet, but they do get Pheasant etc cooked (I boil it for a short time and use the water to add to their dry food)  ;)

Goose & Belle like to eat stinking dead raw rabbit and love crunching the bones when we are out and about  >:( But never touch a fresh dead whole rabbit  :-\ :005:

A dog is designed so they get the most benefit from eating raw meat and raw bones. You need to decide however which way you want to feed your dog, can you cope with raw ?(your dog certainly can) or do you prefer he eats cooked meat (without cooked bones).
Once you have decided that will you be making up your own meals for him or just feeding this game as extra's?.
Once you've decided that then off you go, you are not restrained by how young your dog is it can be easily raised on these meats from day one without problems.
I give mine game occasionally only because I found it difficult to source, but now as I have contacts mine will be feed much more of it.

Mine get raw rabbit and pheasant (not all the time but as part of their 4 or 5 raw meals per week), well two of them do, the other one is a fussy madam and won't eat it  ::)  I don't think age really matters, if I had another pup just now I'd give it to them as well. The rabbit they get as a half carcass, it's gutted and skinned but that's it and the pheasant they have as mince as that's how I've had most of it processed.
