What plants do dogs HATE to chew?
« on: February 15, 2008, 02:28:33 PM »
hiya

Monty is just home but is eating my garden as if hes never seen a bowl of food in his life!!!

He is eating ALL the plants in the garden including the bark ground cover and has started (worryingly) to eat the whirte stone chips.  My heart is in my mouth and thinks its a game when I say "No", he just jumps around enjoying himself.  I also have tried to put him on lead to keep him away from plants that may be dangerous but he jumps aroung half choking himself in the lead.

I know dogs will be dogs but I still want a decent garden although up here in Scotland the weather is hardly ever decent enough to sit out.

HELP please before Monty is in the dog house!!!
Monty is a pest - but we love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have tried distracting him but he is stubborn and thinks I am daft.
My hubby thinks I should plant cactus!!!!!!! that might stop him but seriously I would consider planting lots of a particular plant if I knew he would stop munching.

Becareful, as Helen says, that there are no toxic plants.
Wherry is more of a trampeler than a chewer so i'm not too sure but could you try a little fence around the boarders (if you have flower beds) and again, making sure there is plenty else to do in the garden?
I did just see something in the garden center, pepper something, to keep dogs and cats away but I don't know what it is or if it's mean/effective etc.
To rid Hostas of slugs they suggest you boil a big bucket of water with loads of garlic in it, leave it to infuse/co cold and chuck it over the plants. This may help deter him and obviously it's not bad for the plants.

I think that unfortunatly having a nice garden and a cocker is somewhat of a difficulty  :-\
