heart Murmur

Smudge has just been to the vets for his booster injections and she says he has developed a slight heart murmur. This has really upset me as he seems to be such a fit healthy little chap. He is only 15months old. Fortunately he is lovely and slim . I am so worried as he is the light of my life and I just love him to pieces.

I don't know very much about heart murmours, but I do know my parents' Cavalier had one, and lived a long and active life - my Dad even walked her up the fells in the lake district.  It was her heart that eventually gave out, but that was at a good old age (for a Cavalier, at any rate!) and although she was on some heart medication towards the end of her life, it really did not impact upon her quality of life in the slightest.

I think quite a lot of dogs can have a slight murmour - it's something to keep an eye on, but no cause for major panic.

Im the owner of a very active fit scallywag of a JRT who has a heart murmur, it doesnt cause her any problems in the slightest. I was devastated to hear that she had it when she was young, but the more you hear the more you find it is not un common and they do go on to live long happy active lifes  :luv: Daisy sends a squidge to Smudge  :luv:

Whilst Jasper was at the vet hospital they discovered he had a slight murmur but were not sure if he had always had it or was caused by his aneamia from his SLE but they told us it shouldn't bother him and treat him as normal. Try not to worry too much many dogs have them and are never detected but now you know you can keep any eye on things.

Daisy our cocker had a heart murmer and lived to 13 1/2 so try not to worry too much. Hope everything turns out well.

please try not to worry, heart murmurs are quite common in young puppies, and most disappear as they age.
its something a vet will just monitor , unless its a bad one, in which a vet would make an appointment to  do an echocardiogram ( ecg)  and scan the heart.

but i'm sure your puppy will be fine, just enjoy him.  :luv:

He will be fine.  It is natural for you to worry.  My Chloe had 3 relapses of AIHA in her 2nd year which resulted in her heart being damaged significantly and also her lungs, yet she pootled on regardless (and happily) for another 7 years!  Try not to fret too much. :blink: :blink:

My last cocker, Sophie, was diagnosed with a heart murmur when she was young.  The murmur never affected anything she did, she was never on any medication and lived until she was 14 years of age.   Please don't worry, I am sure Smudge will be just the same.

you can ask for a vetsign cardioscreen test to be done which is a simple blood test that detects chemicals in the blood its an early detect test or an echocardiogram which will show later more developed heart problems.  The blood test can rule out lung problems which can sometimes be misdiagnosed as a heart problem.

If your dog does have a heart problem you should let your breeder know as heart problems can be hereditary.

I can give you info on the vetsign test I've done it as part of a pre breed program.
