AIHA
« on: March 17, 2008, 03:49:16 PM »
Well, after Chloe and her long battle, I never thought I would hear this uttered again but it came up today at Kali's vet visit.  A few days ago when Kali was sleeping on the settee, I noticed a stained patch of nasal fluid on the leather.  It was only lightly tinged but it set me off worrying so I took her to the vet today.  I explained that about 3 weeks ago, I dropped a bone on her bed for her but she got underneath and it hit her on the nose.  It didn't bleed at the time and she didn't seem too bothered but I wondered if I had caused some sort of trauma :'(  Also, she seems to have slowed down a bit.  Not a lot, just slightly and it also bothered me.

So, she has been examined and apart from a slight tenderness in her abdomen, he couldn't find anything else wrong.  She has no temperature, her nose is showing no sign of swelling and there is no obstruction.  He said it may just be that she is getting older now and so isn't so inclined to do the mad puppy thing :-\  Of course, we were then left with unexplained blood loss and he asked if I had heard of AIHA.  I assured him that there wasn't much he could tell me about it but that it hadn't crossed my mind.  He said that she seemed fine but that they can sometimes be anaemic without any noticeable signs.  Anyway, the upshot of all this is that he is satisfied today that all is ok but that if she still has this slight lethargy in a week or two, I am to take her back for a full blood screen.

To be honest, I didn't hear much after he said AIHA.  All I could think of was 'Dear Lord, not again'  I feel sick to my stomach now :'( :'(

Aww Sheryl what a worry for you. I hope it is nothing like that. I know you will worry yourself sick but it could just be her getting a bit older and settling down. Maybe she has banged her nose herself, ours do nudging doors open or going full steam ahead. I hope she's ok.

Sheryl, have everything crossed that's it's not AIHA, I know how hard you and Chloe fought it  :luv: :'(

It really could be something to do with her nose and you bouncing a bone off it which could have resulted in a slight scrape and scab which caused the slight discharge.  I know when bonzo here finally got whatever he had up his nose out  my Ugg boot had a nice speckling of watery blood all over it from his sneeze.

I know you'll be keeping a close watch, and keep us updated  :luv: :luv: :luv:

I'm sure Kali will be fine, but what a worry for you.

Sending hugs to you and positive vibes to Kali.

By the way, found this support group that may be of interest, if only to put your mind at ease. x

Hi Sheryl, I so hope it does not turn out to be AIHA, she is probably just slowing down with age. In the interim though you could always give her a tiny bit of raw liver as this wouldn't hurt and would help her Iron levels, I'm sure that is what helped Fenn when she was anaemic?

Keeping all crossed for you hun, try not to panic, I know it is so hard xxxxxx

Oh Sheryl hun, I'm sure Kali will be fine and it's nothing sinister  :luv:  As others have said, they do often start to calm down a bit as they get older (has to happen some time eh?!). I know nothing anyone can say is going to stop you worrying though, we'll be keeping all fingers and paws crossed here that she picks up in the next few days  :-* :luv:

Sheryl, she's about the same age as Jarvis isn't she? In the last month or so i have noticed a HUGE difference in Jarvis, he's far more obedient, trots along nicely on walks instead of behaving like a racing greyhound, and has generally slowed down. He's also started cocking his leg regularly so i think it's just that he's grow'd up. ;)

Fingers crossed she's just bashed her nose. It could be she had a scab inside that got knocked again?

Oh I really hope it's not.

In a way it would have been better for your vet to have said nothing at this stage as I am sure you will be looking for signs now won't you?

I think it seems quite realistic to assume trauma to her nose at this stage. Lets all hope that she is back to her normal self soon.
