need information on the breed
« on: March 19, 2008, 12:18:37 PM »
Hi
Im not sure if this is in the right place.

I have a wonderful english/american cocker cross Doogle. I have posted about him before. Before Christmas I found an awful tumour on the cheek of his mouth. It was removed sadly,
two weeks ago I found a lump on his neck on the same side of the other tumour. He had the lymph node removed. When he went to have his stitches out he still had a big lump ( bigger than the one removed ) sadly it is the tumour back, its very aggresive so how long I will have my special boy I dont know.

My question is.. I love this breed so much I would like to have another cocker. I breed cavalier spaniels so I know they have to have certain certificates for heart and eye etc. Can anyone tell me what I am to look out for when chosing a good breeder. I want to make sure I dont buy a puppy with lots of problems as I hope one day to have puppies from a good bitch/line. I dont want to go into this lightly and I want to keep the breed as healthy as possible. I know, as in cavaliers, there are many breeders that breed for money and dont have the health of the breed in their interest. I DO ! I DO NOT WANT TO CREATE PROBLEMS IN THE BREED. I would be grateful to anyone who can point me in the right direction for a good genuine breeder and what certificates the parents should hold.

I'm sorry to hear about poor Doogle too.

Included in the article Jean has given is this link to potential hereditary problems in the breed and the health tests that can be done...

Thanks for the links. I give buyers of my puppies the third degree. I bombard my prospective owners with questions and if there is any niggle of doubt and that I dont feel comfortable with, I wont sell my pups. Its like giving up my own babies and feel this is how a breeder should be. I needed to know the types of problems in the breed and what to look for. Im grateful for your help as, like with my cavaliers, cocker breeders/people only want the best for the breed. Ive been on the Kennel club site and there are litters on there. I have time on my side and will search until I am satisfied I have found the right breeder and puppy.  :D
