At what age did you bitch have her first season?
« on: April 05, 2008, 09:05:21 AM »
Not that I am obsessed with timing of our holiday or anything  ;) but just wondered at what age did your cocker have her first season and was it a major headache or go quite smoothly.

Fern had her first season around 9 months old - but this can vary dog to dog anywhere from 8 months (I think) to anything around 2 years as every dog is different like us humans

Fern's season was a nightmare but that was because we had an entire male in the house at the very beginning - then he went off to the kennels for a holiday till she had finished  ;)
Other than that it wasn't too much of a problem except we couldn't take her out too much just in case a dog smelt her - So I did a lot of clicker training with her in the garden to tire her out and played with her instead of walking 9so she still got her excercise but just a different way)

I was going to put a thread like this on this morning, basically we go on holiday on the 18th july for 2 weeks and the dogs are booked in at kennels, I just realised that mylee will be 7 and a half mths old then (8mths on our return) and they are booked in to share a kennel as its company for eachother but wilson is entire(he is only 17mths old), do you think it is likely she will come into season while I am away? I know its impossible to say really but I am really struggling between letting them share or seperating them, the kennels are really good and take them on 2 lead walks a day and 2 off lead runs in a paddock, do you think I should seperate them and suggest they have their walks together or will this mess with thier heads not being together any of the other times there? I really need some advice, it upset just to book them into kennels but to think of them not even together makes me feels sad for them! I really dont want to neuter wilson and mylee is too young too  :-\

Sasha had her first season at 10 months, Ellie had hers at 8 months. They are all different so you can not forcast it.

Willow was born Dec 10th 06 and first season was July 16th, which made her just a few days over 7 months.

Thats when I don't want it to happen ::), I know they are all different, just curious to know whether the majority was all around the same time.

The youngest girl I have had come into season was 18 months old and the oldest was 26 months old before her 1st season but mine usually have their first season at 20 months old. They all could have had silent seasons the 1st time but my entire males have never given me any indication that they were in season until they actually showed typical season swelling and discharge.

Just goes to show that they are all different  :D :D

Mollie was 7 1/2 months when she had her first, we had no problems, just couldn't go out anywhere with her so did lots of training and games at home instead.

My last cocker, Sophie, was 12 months old when she had her first season.  She went into kennels towards the end of it and they were happy to have her there, they just kept a close eye on her to make sure she didn't come into contact with any boy dogs.  Before she went into kennels it was a bit difficult.  I did still take her walks because I didn't think it was fair on her to garden bound for so long, but kept her close to me on a lead and didn't have too much trouble, I just picked her up when a dog took too much interest.  Have to say though that I had dogs I had never seen before sitting outside our garden gate.

Ellie's first season, on the other hand, was totally different.  She was 10 months old when she came into season and we were on holiday in a holiday cottage in the Lake District at the worst part of her season.  The only problem we had was that the cottage had beige carpets but I bought her doggy pants for when she was in the cottage so that solved the problem of her marking the carpets.  As far as boy dogs were concerned, not one of them bothered with her.  Obviously, being on holiday, we carried on going out everywhere but even when we were chatting to people with boy dogs not one of them bothered in the slightest with her, not even giving her a sniff around her rear end.  I was a bit miffed actually, I think she is really pretty and could not understand what they didn't see in her !!
