Just out of interest, what is it about grapes that are bad for dogs?  A friend of mine called me when Dexter was a puppy and told me he'd read in Metro that I mustn't feed him grapes or raisins and sultanas as they were bad for him.

We have a couple of African Grey parrots who love to throw their food out on the floor and Dexter likes to hoover it up (well everything apart from the birds eye chillies! :005:) but obviously I have to be careful with him when they have grapes...he's had a couple but he's still in the land of the living at the moment

Don't know what it is about grapes. Only know the vet told me on no account to give them to my last Cocker,Deefer, who adored them He would have one 3 times a day whenever he had his eye drops. She told me she had previously given them to her dogs but had read that they were dangerous for dogs. My lovely Deefer developed stomach cancer at 8 and died within 3 weeks ,which I still cry about cos I loved him so much. Typing this is upsetting me even now nearly 3 years later. He also loved apples and apple cores and again the vet said these were toxic for dogs as the pips contain arsenic! Naturally I blamed my self for Deefer's early death . Our Cockers are so precious as are all dogs and I certainly make sure that Smudge doesn't have either of these fruits but he does love carrots so thats a good thing!

Grapes (and so raisins and sultanas) are poisonous to dogs, a large quantity can ultimately lead to kidney failure and death.

As Sarah says grapes are extremely toxic to dogs and raisins and sultanas are worse. They are not exactly sure what it is that causes the toxicity but it appears to become concentrated in the dried fruit. You might be lucky and get away with it with your dog but it's really not worth taking the chance as they are absolutely known to be toxic...

I still give my lot apple cores but I break them up first and hoke out the pips. TBH though they'd probably be ok as the pips are quite tough and they'd have to actually chew them open for them to do any harm which is unlikely when they're wolfing down a piece of apple, with my lot it barely touches the sides  :005:  Still, always better safe than sorry and it's easy enough to remove them.

Thanks for the link Nicola.  Dex doesn't get into the parrots room that often and they love their grapes so don't throw them out very often -- phew!

As for apple pips, I'm going to have a battle on my hands come autumn when there are fallers to be had  :lol2:
