Other dogs & people
« on: May 07, 2008, 09:39:41 PM »
Misty is 19 months old, we took her to puppy classes & training classes for almost a year where she was socialised with all manner of other breeds, including hoomans  ;).

Now the thing that has me puzzled is that apart from our Collie x and my parents' Border terrier, she shows no interest what so ever in other dogs unless they happen to be Cockers.
If we should chance to meet another Cocker whilst out & about then everything has to stop while Misty goes to chat/sniff/play and if the next dog that comes along is not of the Cocker persuasion she won't even check her pace.

Same thing goes for people, she's completely uninterested in them unless they happen to be owned by a Cocker, then they are worth an acknowledgement.
She's not the least bit aggressive or stand-offish and doesn't appear to be anxious around dogs or people. She does get uncomfortable in crowds but I guess being 14" tall can do that to you.

George, our Collie x is completely different, he's a dog's dog, any strangers, canine or human, have to be checked out.

So I am wondering if this is common behaviour for a Cocker.
Misty, Cooper.

She's a very discerning dog  :005: Now you've said it though, one of mine always runs to greet cockers.

I very rarely see other cockers on our walks, it's all labs, springers and labradoodles around here.  My two don't take any notice of other dogs at all, they are so rude they will blank a dog who might just want to be friends ::)

Ben rarely plays with other dogs - only games of chase interest him  ::)  He definately doesn't do the pawing / mouthing games!  He can't share either so I have to hide his ball if another dog gets close.  He used to be fine and went to puppy classes along with walks with a group of assorted dogs, they used to play ball with no nastiness ................. he then hit his teens and became a teenage hoody .............. still waiting for him to grow out of it  ::)

He ignores most dogs and people out on walks unless he remembers that they've given him a treat in the past  :005:  There are a couple of favourite dog walkers (both elderly and carry lots of bonios) he makes a beeline for them and mugs them for a biscuit!

Just to be contrary - he will also pick out a nicely dressed person (dogless of course) and get within a foot of them before shaking mud and water over them  >:(

  • To understand a cocker, you need to be a cocker!

She obviously has taste!  :005:

My two have a favourite breed too, but its Golden Retrievers!  There is one in particular that Maddi goes daft for!

i thought it was just my cocker pup that did that, she loves other cockers, theres a beautiful golden one called fudge that we often meet in the park and its like they've known each other for ages and funnily the owner (never know the owners names just the dogs  :005: ) said fudge is exactly the same, its as if they know their own.

Although we did meet a huge lab in park on friday evening, extremely well behaved and controlled until he saw Cassie then it was goodbye owner, hello puppy, even when the owner finally got him away he came bounding back for round two. It was sweetest thing a huge big lab playing really nice and gentle with a little puppy, best bit was when they both lay down with noses touching and cassie put her little paws on top of the big labs paws, times like that you wish you had a camera on you all the time  :luv:

Skye loves playing chases with other dogs and gives them such a dirty look if they're not up for it!  :lol2:

Our dogs are not that bothered one way or the other about other dogs when they're off-lead; I think Spike would rather have a rabbit; ;) on-lead Domino particularly is much more reactive..........he does tend to lack a little confidence with larger dogs.   :shades:

In a way I've found it slightly easier with a dog that doesn't insist in greeting every other dog like a long lost friend; Stanley, our lab, loved meeting other dogs so much I would spend a large proportion of the walk prising him away from them!!! ::) :005:

Fargo will speak to anything and everything, but my greyhound gets freaked out by most other dogs....except other greyhounds and other cockers  :005:

Mikey and Herbie do that too.  Why do you get dogless families out walking in the countryside dressed in their best white attire?? :005:
