Should I/could I own a cocker?
« on: May 30, 2008, 04:07:47 PM »
I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I've been seriously thinking about getting a cocker spaniel for some years now but Im not entirely sure if my situation would be fair on the animal so before I rush out any buy one I thought I should get some expert advice.

I am a PhD student living in Edinburgh with my boyfriend (John)of many, many years. We have a large four bedroomed flat (One upstairs one downstairs, not a block of flats) and fairly big private and secure garden.

My boyfriend works full time and while I can easily work from home a few days a week I do have to make an appearance in the lab the rest of the time. My hours are flexible though so I can basically go into work anytime I want which usually means I leave at 11 and John
is home by 5. Weekends are completely free.

When I was ten years old my parents bought me a blue roan male cocker spaniel (Dillan) and I got completely hooked on the breed and loved him to bits. I did really well with the dog training, competing in many competitions most at the adult level and we never competed in a show in which we didn't get placed! I know all about the health care and grooming- I was so good at this I made some extra pocket money in my teenaged years grooming other people's cocker's!

Both my parents worked full time so my gran 'babysat' Dillan during the day which worked out extremely well as I trained Dillan
to 'assist' my gran. He also was a regular visitor to a special needs nursery where he helped kids with language problems and proved to be a massive hit! Walks were never a problem either, once Dillan was old and strong enough weekdays consisted of an hour walk
each morning and a 2 hour walk at night plus all day hikes at the weekend.

My problem now is that I live a bit too far for my family to babysit a dog during the day. As my previous dog was never left alone Im not really sure how long and often is an acceptable amount. Would 11 to 5 o'clock three times a week be too much? Would getting an older dog or two dogs be any better?

I will take any advice you have to offer. My dream would be to get a black, gold or black+tan dog just now that I can train in both obedience and agility but also I would like to attempt showing as well and maybe start breeding in five or ten years when I know
enough about the breed standards, the genetics of health and temperment and show rules and there arn't 'too many' puppies being breed!

I would prefer a young dog so that I could train to be gentle and calm with the children in the nursery and hopefully help in the education of children with Downs syndrom, Autisim and various language problems. However a confident yet calm older dog would work just as well.

If you think that my situation would be too cruel on a dog then of course I shall have to keep dog ownership on the back
burner until retirement, although Im only 24 so thats a long time to wait! John is also very keen on getting a dog as he has also owned dogs in the past.....although they were
jack russels-highly inferior to the spaniel in my eyes!hehehe

Life just isn't the same without a spaniel in it!!!

Sorry for the long post, I just want to be sure I am doing the absolute best that I can
for any dog I may (or may not) get.

Thanks for reading this,
                        Roslyn.

Hi Roslyn,

It may be worth reading through this post - http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=44038.0 There is lots of good advice in their on length of time etc.

If you hours are flexible, could you go in earlier - then come back for a couple of hours then go back again? Also another option to consider is a dog walker/daycare service.

Good luck with your decision and welcome to the site  :D

Hello Rosyln, Welcome to COL!

I think your working hours sound very ok for an adult dog but maybe a little tricky for a pup to start with - will your hours always be this flexible too?

You could look at day care or dog walkers for the first year maybe and a bit more juggling?

Completely agree. Once the dog is used to being left alone and you have slowly built up the time alone to six hours it should be fine 3 days per week. A little too long for a pup , but maybe a dog walker/sitter can help out in the puppy stages.

Agree with everyone else your circumstances sound manageable and with everything you described I don't think you'd struggle at all. If you do get a puppy and it is left a while on the days you are out just be prepared for toilet training to take longer - that happened in our house but was worth it all to have our gorgeous boy!!!! In the early stages if you do get a puppy asking a neighbour or friend to pop in will help or dog walker/day car like already suggested.

One thing I would add is that getting two would not be a solution - you need to put in more time to train and socialise two dogs (when getting them at the same time), as they will need individual time with you as well as time together....  ;)

I think a young pup should have lots of piddle and play breaks. is there any puppy day care where you live?. or can you organise a rota of friends until the puppy is bigger. Thats what I did initially then arranged for them to be let out walked when I was out as they got older. I now have a purpose built run and kennels on my mothers croft which isnt possible for most people I know.
I dont think your work should be a problem as long as you have a plan of action prior to getting a pup. just about everywhere has dog walkers now. where do you live ? maybe some colers can recommend someone to you.

Thanks so much for the replies!

My PhD is in human genetics so it's very computer based.....one day of lab work and then 3 months of making sence of the results! So hopefully now that Im settled in work I can start doing even more at home although the pet sitter idea is a great one! Plus Im trying to guilt trip my boss into letting me bring a dog into the office sometimes.....to help my 'creative development'! ;) I might even be allowed to do 'half' days everyday of the week, doing half my work at home then going in for the afternoon, taking the time down to 4 hours.

Can anyone recomend a good puppy sitter in edinburgh? It's such a beautiful city with some amazing green spaces and beaches for dog walking......Im sooooooo excited about taking my dog up Arthur's seat one day (if I get one!).

Im so doggie mad I think I would quit my PhD/take a pay cut/sell my boyfriend to get one! :005:

What do you think would be the prefect age of dog for my situation?

Everyone's doggie pictures are so cute! You are all very lucky!!!

x

Hi there here is a link to a daycare centre that caters for the needs of puppies. Have read throught it but cant see what area's it covers. It looks fantastic and came across this site many months ago  :shades: Maybe worth a call if its a puppy your after as puppies have much greater needs than an older dog (house training just being one of them).
