weight of average cocker
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:52:00 PM »
Bailey is 17.5 (dont know whether its kilo s or pounds) ph34r ph34r

Anyway he is quite long in the body and his back is below my knee height.

What weight should the average working cocker be?  He has just been clipped for summer and I have noticed that his ribs can be felt quite clearly.  When he lays down you can see them very slightly but not when hes just standing up.

What weight is your cockers?  and what is a healthy weight for them to be.  He is almost 2 year old by the way ;)
Loves my family and dog Bailey more than life its self

Jarvis is a BIG cocker -  one of the biggest i've met, and weighs between 15-15.5kg i prefer him at the lower end of the scale because he has a huge rib cage and any extra weight makes his waist disappear ::) i would just judge by eye and feeling his ribs. If he has a clearly defined waist then he's fine. :D
Owned by Jarvis (Cocker), and Lucy (Cavalier).

Gari (show type) is 15.5kg and supposedly fat according to the vet, although I don't think he is, maybe just a tiny bit. :D

how tall is your dog?

a weight is fairly irrelevant and this thread will give you a huge variation in weights - unless you know the height of the dog it's difficult to assess whether he will be overweight - photos will give a better indication.

Dogs often look like they have a waist....from the side, it's looking down on their back that gives a true indication.   When you feel ribs easily it should be REALLY easily, running your fingers lightly over their rib cages and you should feel fur and a very thin layer of skin/fat.  It shouldn't feel more than a few mm.

My worker is 15 1/2 inches tall and 12.7 kgs - and thats fine on him  ;)

I can't measure Gari's height as he has a bizarre fear of measuring tapes, but I can feel his ribs easily. However he has a big roll of loose skin at his neck, I thought it was maybe just his age.

Quincy (worker) 14 months, weighed 13.3 kg last week and is @ 40cm at the top of his shoulder.
I often think he should be mor meaty than he is, but the vet says hes fine just a fit lean dog, cause sometimes i can feel his ribs more than other times? hes not got a huge appetite either?
My little angel, sent to me in my time of need, i love you with every piece of my broken heart xx

Ben hovers between 14-15 kilos.  The vet thinks he's just right and very fit so I'm happy!  He is a tall leggy worker though so a show cocker would be different.

It's the same with people - you have to take height in to the equation - I keep saying that I'm under tall not over weight!

I can also put my hands over the narrow part of the waist and my fingers meet if I stretch them enough  :005:

Archie (worker) who is 6 months old got weighed at the vets on Friday.

He is 11.7kg and about 16 inches tall.

The vet was said that he was looking good and was a healthy weight!
