Whistle Training - Methods
« on: June 27, 2008, 08:48:39 PM »
Hi all,

Thought it might be useful to share with you the whistle training method for recall which our trainer has suggested.

There's probably a million-and-one ways to train this, but this is the method we intend to use so fingers crossed it'll work!

Feel free to comment or post alternative methods/suggestions.

========================================================

Things you need
- Choose a treat that is going to be used only for the whistle and nothing else.
- A whistle that when you blow it you can hear it.

Step 1
Blow the whistle while your dog is with you and feed them the whistle treat while holding their collar.
Do this two or three times a day for three days.

Step 2
Blow the whistle while your dog is in the same room but not at your side.  When they come, hold their collar and feed them the treat.
Do this for two or three days.

Step 3
Blow the whistle while your dog is in another room.  When they come, hold their collar and feed them the treat.
Do this for two or three days.

Step 4
Blow the whistle while your dog is in the garden and you are in the house.  When your dog comes, hold their collar and feed them the treat.
Do this for two or three days.
At this stage, you can vary the size and amount of treat.

Step 5
Blow the whistle while your dog is on a long line or extending lead in a field.  When your dog comes, hold their collar and feed them the treat.
Do this for two or three days.

Step 6
Blow the whistle while your dog is off lead but not playing.  When your dog comes, hold their collar and feed them the treat.

Step 7
Blow the whistle while your dog is playing (you may have to blow the whistle more than once). When your dog comes, hold their collar and feed them the treat.
