The Kennel Club/Optigen Results
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:10:38 PM »
Just found this on the Kennel Club Website, thought it might be of use, MODS please feel free to  move if I have posted in the incorrect place!

New DNA Testing Schemes
07-Jul-08

At the request of the Cocker Spaniel Breed Council, the General Committee of the Kennel Club has recently approved two new official DNA testing schemes for prcd-PRA and FN (familial nephropathy).

These tests are offered by OptiGen in America and further details can be obtained from them at www.optigen.com.

Copies of all future test certificates issued by OptiGen will be sent directly to the Kennel Club, where the test result will be added to the dog’s details on the registration database.  This will trigger the publication of the test result in the next available Breed Records Supplement, and the result will also appear on any new registration certificate issued for the dog and on the registration certificates of any future progeny of the dog.

Owners who have already had their dog(s) DNA tested for these conditions can send copies of the test certificate into the Kennel Club and the data will be added to the dog’s registration details. In addition, if the owner includes the original registration certificate for the dog (not a copy) then a new registration certificate will be issued, with the DNA result on it, free of charge.  Please send the DNA test certificates to:

KC sent out the notification this morning.  I like the fact that for once if you send your certificate in you will be able to have your certificate updated for free if you have already undertaken these tests, usually the KC will charge for any amendments.  So I'm sending mine off this morning to get it updated yippee!! :D  Having the results in the BRS will be so much easier when looking for stud dogs or dams that have been tested when looking for a puppy and a good breeders.  Brilliant news well done the cocker club.

So does that mean that people who are buying a new puppy will see the health tests results on the pedigree? Well as long as the breeders send off their paperwork? Have i got this right?  ::)

Brilliant news!  Well Done to everyone who was involved in campaigning for this to happen.  Does anyone know...will the FN tests that have been carried out by Antagene also be recognised by the KC, or only those done by Optigen?

It's good the KC will update the certificates for free too!!!

Yes, Antagene certificates are just as acceptable for the KC database as Optigen ones - I checked with Dr Sampson.

Does anybody know if the KC will show on ped certs if a dog is clear by Parentage? Tinker hasn't been tested by Optigen as both her sire & dam were Optigen A1 which makes her automatically A1. I have copies of both of the parents certs but not sure if the KC will show this information?

Thankfully Yes. If you send the Parents results to the KC, Tinker will have hereditarily Clear written on the DNA tests section of the certificate  :D
