Itchy Skin

When we first got Charlie he had a couple of pink patches just in front of his arm pits.  When we took him to the vet for his 'MOT'  and showed him this he told us that this was more than likely due to excess oil that was being produced because of his weight - he said that this should go when his weight had reduced.   He did give us some anti bacterial shampoo, but to be honest it is neither use nor ornament.

I have got his weight down to what I think is reasonable, although I admit there is still a little bit to go, but the itchy patches are getting worse and he seems to be licking then which is making the skin / fur around it pink. 

I had considered (before he came to us) that it may have been boredom, but I doubt this is the case now.

My mum suggests giving him piriton to see if that works - I was wondering if there was any solution or cream that I could try on him

I don't know if it's the same problem but we have friends that have a Spaniel with a similar problem. They spent an absolute fortune on creams and injections from the vet, then someone suggested using 'sudocrem'. It worked and their dog no longer licks or chews.
Has to be worth a try for the price!

Oh, itchy skin is soooo hard because it may have so many causes   Does he have ear problems too? No fleas?

Yes, you can give piriton and it will ease the scratching, but you still need to get to the bottom of what is causing this.

Because of where it is, I suspect yeast infection

Thanks Molly, I'll give it a go.  The thought never entered my mind, but when I do think, it is very soothing, plus hopefully it will deter him from having a lick of it    even more of a bonus is the fact that we have some in !

Michelle - I agree I do need to get to the bottom of it.  He is flea'ed and I do check him for 'visitors' and he is clear - what would cause a yeast infection

Krum gets this every so often. Dont know why. He is always a bit itchy on certain areas but every couple of months he gets sore bits on his armpits and needs anti-b's and piriton. Vet and me cant work out why....

William had sore patches in his armpits on and off when he was a puppy. We tried Sudocrem and it irritated his skin, then tried soothing Calendula ointment, which helped. The soreness became more infrequent as he got a bit older then stopped altogether.
