I have a working cocker - so not really too bother about his "image" - but recently i discovered that the two wee flaps under his ears were in fact matted hair - i tried and tried to comb them out - but he eventually would not let me near them - so i have to admit i cut them out!! Solved the problem - but only advised in desperate times and with mutts who are not too vain!!!  :005:

Hello,

I have just removed a disgusting about of knots and mats from my new Girl it saddened me she must have been very uncomfortable. So far I have trimmed her ears bought her spaniel bowls and amended one of my terry toweling headbands which is really soft and comfy if she may ever need her ears held back...this is all new to me but I will learn as I go on I guess like I did with my other Breeds ;)

Roxys ears are a terrible mess.  I groom her every other day or so and comb them out using a detangling spray but they are always so matted! there are a couple of matted lumps underneath but I'm leaving them for the proper groomers to clip out rather than try and cut them.

I'm also going to ask them what they can do with her ears.

I'll follow this thread to see if anyone has some bright ideas!

I am forever trimming little matted patches from behind Milo's ears.. the hair is so thick it is forever matting and must be sooo uncomfortable. Luckily its right behind his ears so you can't see the mess I make!

Ditto - I do exactly the same when Lola is getting "rastafarian dreadlocks"  :005:

I'm forever snipping out a matt or two from Daisy's ears.  I religiously groom her every night and she often dozes off whilst I'm doing her ears, so it's clearly not causing her any distress.  Sometimes I wonder where it all comes from - I can snip and snip, but they are so hairy (thankfully) you can't see my mistakes!

Domino's ears get a bit matted underneath as well.

I try & de-tangle as much as possible but I have had to resort to snipping bits off here & there.........(I have been known to do the same to my own hair!!!!   :005:)

I thought I was on top of the tangles on Murphy who is a working type but still he got a bit matted under his ears. I was mortified but cut them off as it's under the ear and decided I'm better off (and so is he) if I just keep it short.

we've been lucky so far touch wood  ;) I groom Dax every day and spray the ears before brushing with Quistel lotion - brush first - comb second - if I come across the beginning of a matt I keep splitting it with my fingers without pulling against the skin and only put the comb in to the separated parts of the matt - this is usually successful so to date scissors haven't been needed - it takes a while but it is worth it - I've done this a couple of times between his toes - he tolerates this fine but wouldn't let me near a matt with a comb because it would pull.   ;)
