Really sorry to hear you all got such a fright. At the risk of being shot down in flames I think it sounds as if the owner did the best he could....? Obviously the dogs had got out of their own garden somehow but he was responsible enough to have them muzzled in the first place (which not all owners of aggressive dogs do) and he apologised to you as well as chasing after them. I'm sure he got a shock too but obviously not im comparison to yours. Greyhounds dont usually see smaller dogs as prey but can be very very boisterous. Racers are not trained to 'seek and destroy', they go on sight and chase moving things. Sounds like these dogs are not well socialised and as a result are aggressive but luckily they were muzzled. Dont let it affect your opinion of all greyhounds. I know dozens of ex racers who are the softest things alive with people and dogs.

I'm sure your dogs will recover okay. Try and just act normal around them and give them opportunities to meet friendly steady dogs for a few days. I'm pretty sure the greyhound owner will be far more careful in future after his telling off from the police.

I agree mine have had quite a bit of rough and tumble from greys and lurchers as they really do play roughly

Billys best friend in the whole wide world is a lurcher, he absolutely adores her and yet she is very rough with him! Funny though as the greyhound that we see in the park every morning is absolutely terrified of Billy !

I agree with Jo too, and Gari's best friend is a gentle greyhound, but I have met a few aggressive unsocialised ones and they are very frightening. It's lucky that the ones you met were muzzled and at least the owner was sensible enough to do that. I can understand how frightened you were and hope you and your dogs get over it quickly.

I have no doubt that greyhounds, like all dogs, are great natured creatures, it's just a shame that my only 2 experiences with them have resulted in fear and injury (about a month after we got Molly, I was walking her in the park with my friend and her cocker, Diesel, and a rescue greyhound went for Diesel because he got too close and Molly made a run for it - it had issues but I nearly lost Molly because of them). Think I need to find a nice one to build up my own courage of them, before I see how the pups are with them.

Poor Ches keeps running and squealing in his sleep. Molly's coming round now though, the sight of doggy choc buttons perked her up a bit

Poor you and poor dogs. It is very frightening when something like this happens. Why are some people so stupid and irresponsible?

   -- i agree- the dogs were muzzled and they didnt actually do any damage, try not to act too stressed as your dogs will pick up on it ,theres a couple of big lurcher/nearly greyhounds by us , they come haring in at full speed and i worry if they bang into my dogs they will hurt them, and sighthounds do do that banging shoulder thing to knock each other off balance , i always try to get in their way and theyve been fine , that said i have no problem shouting at any dog to behave a sharp NO or THATS ENOUGH  loudly often stops a dog in its tracks before trouble starts ,err what do you want the police to do !! , if they had actually attacked your dogs fair enough, but they didnt actually hurt your dogs , they jumped up at you , im sorry you were upset , and maybe your dogs are acting accordingly ,try and put it behind you

Even a muzzled dog can harm another - especially a puppy of a few months old    The risk of physical damage is significantly reduced of course, but an adult dog can bruise a puppy, and the psychological damage can take commitment and patience to overcome 

However, I do think that this case was an unforeseen accident rather than an irresponsible dog owner - I'm sure that many of us (including myself) have had escapee dogs  I applaud the owner for recognising that this could happen and keeping his dogs muzzled even when in their own home/garden

The way I saw it, the owner was intending to take the dogs for a walk, he had their leads in his hand and I think they made a run for it before he could hook them onto them. An accident on the owner's part, yes. But I really do doubt this dog was just being overly playful. It was like, crazed, growling and snarling at me when I dared pick Chester up. I could see it's teeth behind the muzzle, have a scratch down my back from it's nails and it even frightened Ewan, who I know to be pretty much fearless. The owner was clearly over-whelmed by 2 dogs far too energetic and strong and intent on doing what they please to control and, in my opinion, should not have them for the sake of the dogs, the public and the owner himself.
I know the dogs will react to how I'm feeling so I'm trying really hard to let it go. It just annoys me when people take on more than they can handle. It's not fair on them or the dogs.
Rant over, positive thoughts I think. And an almost definate sickie tomorrow.

I can understand that you are feeling very shaken up and angry about this, and I hope you and your dogs recover quickly!
But I have to say that I agree with a lot of the comments here that it does seem like an unfortunate accident, rather than an irresponsible owner.  There have been several threads recently about people who have had there dogs attacked, and they have all been along the lines of unmuzzled, completely out of control dogs, and the owners have at best done nothing, at worst blamed the victim.  If this man is already muzzling his dogs, I would imagine this incident will make him even more vigilent - he at least expressed concern for your dogs, rather than just walking off, and was probably mortified that his dogs had behaved so badly, and with such an impact on a young pup. 

This doesn't mean that you aren't entitled to feel aggreived for your dogs - I think you all need some time to relax and get over what must have been an awful experience.

Its just annoying thought isnt it, he should then make sure the garden is secure. I know accidents happen but if you have two that you have got muzzled you do need to be more aware of the surroundings and make sure they are not able to get out.
Mine are just as soft as anything but I would even dare open my front door before they were on their leads because I know if they saw anything tempting they would be off were traning in that area at the moment!!

Hope you all are feeling better today, it's a really unfortunate accident which I'm sure the owner of the grey's has learnt from.  I'm sorry you got scratched, they have really pointy strong toes and nails for running so I can imagine how painful that was.

It's highly probable these 2 greys are rescues, in which case the owner involved may not know their capabilities yet - the fact that they were muzzled is extremely positive, and shows this owner is trying to do their best by the dogs, and I would think he has learnt a very sorry but valuable lesson.  I'm a bit curious as to what would you want to happen to him and the dogs, and what you hope the police will do?

There are lovely dog friendly lurchers and grey's out there - I hope you'll get the chance to meet some soon.

What a horrible thing to happen!!

Maybe it would be worthwhile seeking out some good natured greyhounds to socialise ur dogs with? a dog near me was attcked by a black lab as a puppy and when it got older it was aggressive to all large black dogs, which was such a shame for the owner because it was very friendly to all other dogs but she couldn't let it off the lead in the park incase a big black dog came in.

Dil's best doggie friend was a greyhound called cookie.....I think she was actually in love with him but he was having none of it  and for some reason these two breeds can really get on, so it would be a shame if your dogs became frightened of all greyhounds!

Goodluck with it, time to relax and get over the shock I think!
