colourings
« on: September 18, 2008, 12:49:54 PM »
Jade has a silly amount of tan fur on the side of her mouth. I didn't notice it at first but as she is getting bigger so is it. Although to be honest i first thought it was staining from where she was eating and tried washing it off  ph34r   ::)   :005: But i can now see it is tan fur  :shades: I know this is a very silly question but does this make any difference to her colouring as a blue roan.

Max also has small bits of tan on him - his dad was an orange roan so it must be more of him coming out  :005:

Chester has this - 3 tiny tan spots on his chin. His mum was a blue roan and his dad a tan and white. But I still say Ches is black and white, these dots are so tiny and in a place where no one will ever see them unless they're looking for them. So no, I wouldn't say it affects her colouring as a blue roan at all.

I could be wrong though, I know very little about the technical ins and outs of pedigree breeding etc.

It looks like the sort of staining you often see around lighter shaded particolours' mouths - I don't think this is a tan marking but either way it won't make any difference to Jade's blue roan colour ;)

I was thinking about this the other day, Ozzy has the same but with a couple of spots near his nose as well - his dam is liver roan so I thought that may have something to do with it - may be wrong though

My blue roan used to have them - i thought it was staining. But she also had tan under her paws next to her pads! I have never looked into her pedigree so i dont know what colours she came from?

Another who isnt much help!  ph34r

Eric has bad staining around his mouth and in between his toes and pads and it looks the same as Jade's chops. It is difficult to remove and usually needs the use of a tear stain cleaner for quite a while to get it off.

It is likely that she has a parent who carries the liver gene as well as the blue roan gene. This doesn't affect the name of her colouring though.

Dave is a dark blue roan and he has liver markings around his mouth too (slightly more than Jade is showing on hers at the moment). His Dad is a blue roan but carries the genes to sire liver roan also - hence the small appearance of liver on Dave. Dave had a few liver spots else where on his body when he was a pup but these have since disappeared.

Having the hint of liver around his mouth doesn't affect the name of his colour - he is still a blue roan and most likely carries the liver roan gene.

Bella (a light blue roan) also has the same light tan around her mouth and between her pads. I seem to remember asking the vet (or someone) what it was when she was a puppy and was told it was from her saliva - hence patches where she washes/chews frequently. Her mum was an orange roan and so originally I thought it was from her. Has anyone else heard this theory?

Her mum and dad are both blue roan's although i don't know if they have the same slight tan markings or not. Further back in her pedigree expecially on dads side i've only seen blue roan's. If there is a liver gene then i'm guessing it must be from mum's side, which i know little about at the moment.

It's saliva staining, my Lily being black and white it's more noticable, but definitely staining rather than tan markings.

Hi Jades mum, I think the tan markings on Jade are stainings of some kind, thou Harbethol Look What Umissed has sired Blue roans & Tans & she know has had pups herself of which she also produced a Blue roan & Tan. He also has sired a Black & white tick.  Louise H Look What Umissed (Harvey Normans Mum)

Alfie's half sister who is black and white ticked has a small patch of liver fur, I can't remember exactly where but I think it's on the underside of her jaw, this means that she carries a liver gene. However, Alfie is a light blue roan and he has a patch of colouring around his mouth the same as that in your photo of Jade but it's not 'genuine' liver or tan fur, it's definitely staining. He also has the same thing between the pads of his feet and again it's staining. It's not the same as the liver patch that his sis has.

OH that is interesting to know there are blue roan and tans on her farthers side.

Whatever it is she is still  :luv:

I may just have to try the stain remover and see if there is any difference. There are no other markes between her pads or anywhere else

The Blue roan & tan gene must be carried by both sides, I think Harvey Norman is a carrier, as his grandfather also sires blue roan & tans
