chloe and her first chicken wing!
« on: December 09, 2008, 08:18:15 PM »
Well, I held it, she barked at it, pawed at it...lay down in front of it, sucked it and danced around it. She's now kinda nibbling at it! Just had a thought, was I supposed to take the skin off???

Well she's finally scoffed the lot...left her to it and it took about 15 minutes! She seemed to love it but was scratching at her chops for a moment or two, in the way that she did once when she got a bit of wood stuck in her throat (stole a bit of kindling!). I was terrified, thought she was gonna choke! She got over it though. Two questions: I buy whole chickens and cut them up in portions before freezing...so do I have to be careful where I cut the wing...I mean, could I get it wrong and give her something that could harm her? Second question: shes still hungry..how much of her normal tea should she get..if anything??
Thanks...from Chloe's paranoid Mummy!

1st question - I don't think any part of a chicken would be a problem tbh but I don't give Coco legs because the weight bearing bones are harder and therefore there is more risk of splintering.  Coco has whole chicken carcasses and wings with no problem at all and I am sure she would be fine with legs too, I just don't give them (I am a paranoid mummy too!)

2nd question:  If Chloe has just had one wing I would count that as a third to a half of her meal depending on the size of the wing (small ones I give 3 and large ones 2 for a meal) so I would give Chloe half or 2 thirds of her normal tea - though she should not have cooked/processed food in the same meal as raw as it is digested at different rates so if you have more wings, you could give her another one or two of those.  ;)

Thanks Joules...well, I gave her half her normal dinner (burns kibble and a bit of sardine) in her Kong...she's now out for the count!

What other bones can I safely give her?

Lamb ribs are good but chicken wings and carcasses are easier to get here and I think lamb fat gives Coco the squits  :o  She does have pork ribs too -  I freeze them first to kill off bugs.  ;) I also buy rabbits when I can get them - just chop the whole lot into 5 or 6 chunks and give her the lot - they usually have some of the organs inside too which is perfick!  :D  If you are not going to go the whole hog and change to BARF, I would just stick with the wings - they are great and pretty easy to source and to feed.  If you want to change completely or find out more, you can do a search on here for BARF and you will find out loads more information  ;)

Yup - Lamb ribs are great - Honey also gets lamb bones from Morrissons, though I normally have to add some meat to these as they tend to be the backbone, and so don't have a lot of meat on them.
Pork Ribs are great - the risks from bugs are minimal if you are getting the pork that is fit for human consumption, but freezing them first completely sorts them out.

Like Joules, I find that too much lamb can give Honey the squits - if she's had lamb heart for breakfast, I have to avoid giving her lamb bones at tea....  ;)

To be honest, though, I think Chicken Wings are Honey's favourite - they disappear quickly enough!!  :005:

When they first have one they don't know what to do with it. It's quite funny watching them playing around with it. In in end the realise how to scoff them down very quickly  :005:

Well, Chloe seemed to realise pretty quickly...she had her second one tonight and not only did she almost attack me to get at it, she scoffed it in 2 minutes (I timed her!)
