I think xmas may have caused seperation anxiety
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:02:52 PM »
Harvey has always been very independent from day one. We could leave him crated/uncrated without a ehimper and without mess for about 10 mins and as far as I know of before xmas I left him for 2 hours crated while I did (and failed) my driving test and he was fast asleep when I returned.

Over xmas he's had people with him 24/7! However since then he has become my shadow. If I leave him downstairs in his crate for about an half and hour while I go upstairs he just keeps crying. There would be a brake for about 5 mins then crying again. I walked him before I left, made sure he went to the loo, but this is his pattern-he winges when left.

I'm feeling like a right failure and have created a really clingy pup. I want him to be independent so I can confidently leave him if I have to go out or work for a few hours. I never go to him unless he has stopped crying. He's 12 weeks- we've had him for 3 weeks. He's fed 3 times a day. Walked up to 15mins 3 times a day, clicker trained for a few mins 2 times a day. Apart from that he's a little star. He knows sit, lay down, wait and leave it. He has become very vocal over the last 2 weeks, but I blame my OH for that!

Would just like some advice on what I should be doing, and will this be a forever problem? It's only bothering me because he was fine before Christmas. Sorry about the rant.

Am no expert by any means, but Pepper does the same thing. She's fine as long as there are no doors shut between her and whoever is in the house. As far as we know she's ok when we go out (no complaints from neighbours and I have asked..) She is more than happy to be in a completely differnt room.. by herself or with my other dog, as long as she knows she can get to the person.

What I have found is that if we want to shut her away she settles much better if given something to eat ( a few biscuits in a kong, a pigs ear, something that takes a while to eat - frozen meat and biscuits in kongs work best) Once she's eaten, rather than whine she goes to sleep. Might give you a starting point, say have him with you in the morning then pop him in crate with kong/food toy ( I used to have a brill one by busy buddys, looked a bit like a UFO) and leave for a while after the food has gone. You'll need to work on the length of time, but am sure he'll get the idea.

Once he's twiged that crate means being left but with food, then vary the times you do it (say put him in with breakfast for a few days, then with tea) so he knows it's not just at lunch time

Thank you that's reassuring to know.
I'm going to leave a video camera with him while I'm out to see if he does the same thing while I'm out. I'm not sure if he knows if I'm upstairs (we live in a town house and our bedroom is on the top floor) as I tip toe around.
He's become a right little winger!

I have 2 shadows...Lola more than Biba  ::) i cant even go to the bathroom and shut the door without her crying to come in and she just has to be in the same room as you  :-\ but they do seem to behave differently if we are out and they are left alone...Lola used to go in her crate with a empty loo roll holder stuffed with goodies...as soon as i was getting her goody box ready she would get in her crate and wait ...the crate is now gone but she still wills us out the door in the mornings so she can get her treats and as far as i know they have never created while we are out...when i come home i look through the kitchen window and lola is fast asleep in her bed  :D

As emderpenguin says, if I leave Darcey in her crate or on if I go out I always give her a stuffed kong or 2 (just her kibble with biscuits to stop it all falling out). She will eat these then just sleep. If I shut her in her crate with nothing to eat she does cry (except at bedtime  :luv:).

You just have to start again and build it up gradually. Darcey now has a soft bed as well as a crate which she settles in during the day (I work from home) but it's taken a long while to get to that point - she used to cry/ chew stuff if I was upstairs working and she was free to roam around.

Thankyou so much for these replies. I've got 2 kongs in his toy basket which I haven't opened yet. Doh! I'm going to take him for a walk in a bit then try again. Fingers crossed.

Ok he whines when I'm out of the house too. Took him for a 15 min walk at 5:15 then me and OH went to Tescos and PAH at 6:40. Returned at about 7:40 to the howls. I rang my neighbour who at the moment is a star, she said he started the howls around 7.00. Argggghhhh! I left him a kong with filling but I don't think it's worked as well as I wanted.

What has gone wrong?! He was fine before xmas. He's been sleeping in our room in a crate. Could this be the problem?
