Lead walking (changing sides from left to right)
« on: March 23, 2009, 06:37:41 PM »
Help!!

Need a bit of advice, don't know why but when I trained Indie she was trained to always walk on my left side, think its just something thats generally done with dogs.  Trouble is I now have Neuropathy in my left arm and its quite weak, for holding things in ::)   I am having to try and train Indie to walk on my right hand side and its proving really difficult for both of us to grasp :005:  She remembers for a bit then when she stops for a sniff she forgets and crosses over to the left, nearly tripping me up in the process :005:  I really don't know how to begin training her to do this, cos to me it seems I am working cack handed too.  It could be a long time before I get my arm up and running properly again as I am more than likely going to be having surgery, so I really need to master this before then.

Any advice would be great, Indie is 6 now, so its undoing 6 years of walking on the left, not an easy task :-\  Also its really hard for me too, cos I keep forgetting and hold her lead in my left arm, after scooping poop or don't realise I am doing it till she pulls a bit ::)

ETA: Not sure if I should have put this in general, sorry mods

not a training suggestion but would it be a possibly to use a canix lead around your waist?

sorry - that's a bit of a cop-out from retraining but it may be more comfortable for you  :luv:

Get another dog   :D  Biba walks on the right Lola on the left   ;) No seriously i do understand as i am having to retrain Lola to walk on the right as at physiotherapy he noticed she veers to the left as he think it is easier for her because of her right hip ,so she has lost some muscle mass because of this  she as always walked on the left and although we haven't got 6 years worth to undo I'm having to walk funny to keep her on the right..i am having to swing my right leg towards her to keep her on the right,I'm also keeping her on a shorter lead so she doesn't have the chance to cross me back to the left  :-\ if you find an easier way to crack it let me know  ;)
