The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including post code) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag.  Telephone number is optional (but advisable)

If your dog causes an accident (road etc) or be in a public place you can face a fine of up to £5000 if your dog does not wear an identifcation tag without the correct information.

I personally just have mobile and home number on mine regardless of legislation, which is my own choice and not advocating it for everyone ;)

I have exactly the same.  I don't have Ellie's name as she will go to anyone who calls her and I don't have our address because people would then know where to come and steal her.

I'd also have to have two tags as well if I did + Ruby has been returned twice to me by concerned passersby who found her in a street while I was looking for her on the park where I'd last seen her - am also thinking of putting my vets number on as well

Alway worth having your address on the tag.  Misha once lost her tag while we were out on a walk.  Next day I had an envelope through the door with missing tag and a little note to say they had found it while walking their dogs.

Jack has two tags on his collar atm as I bought him a new one and just never thought about taking old off  :005: I will get round to it though. It has my name, address, home number, mobile number and microchipped on it. Not all on one side of course  :005: . I dont think anyone would be able to get close enough to Jack to look at his collar though  :D
dont take the old one off, she could lose one of them anyway  ;) , when ella came to me she had 3 tags, and i could see why when i first had her she wouldnt get back in the car and would start to run off,   ::)  shes now got 2 one with our home tel and her name and our surname, the other has my mobile, home tel number and postcode, i hope thats enough, in mid wales the dog wardens seem just to want to make sure they have collars and tags, i dont think they have time to go about reading them  :D
Julie owned by Ella, and Bailey the mud monster and little Milo.   R.I.P Kizzy 19.04.97 - 16.06.11, the start of my love for the wiggly ones and Bruno my lovely brave boy

As per my earlier post I now order in bulk Molly loses so many  ;) I got them from ebay and they are really cheap, plus you only pay postage for the first one, free p&p for any more than that  :D Will try to add a link when I get the chance...off on the school run now!

Ruby has one related to her insurance - More Than. It has an ID number on it and a number to call if she is found. They then have all of our details including the vets, and if needed, know that she is insured if she needs any urgent treatment so that there is no delay. She doesn't have any of our contact numbers or address visable, but More Than would contact us to arrange to be reunited if she ever did stray/go missing and was found.

Not sure now if she should have one with our address and contact numbers on now that I have read this thread.

ALL my dogs have on there tags are scan me and then on the back please phone 07********* or house number including area code . they have to have tags by law but i wouldn't ever put the dogs name or address on just in case he or she gets stolen the less they know about your dog the better .

I'm probably being dense but why do you put 'nutured' on it?

I would't put my address on it for security reasons. A. Because if anyone found Mali they would know that I was out and B. Because as someone has already said, anyone seeing it would know where to come if they wanted to steal her.

you put neutered on your dog tags because it makes them far less valuable to dog thieves  - a good looking entire bitch would spell pound signs to a thief as you can breed from them....time and time again  :-\  An entire male is more valuable as he can stud pups but it's usually evident if he is entire - a bitch not so as you would have to check for a spaying scar, so even if your bitch is neutered or not I think it's useful to have 'neutered'  on a tag  ;)

I did wonder if that was the reason - how sad that we have to do that though.

I have
Surname
Postcode
Mobile number ( wouldn't put home number on as, if the dog gets lost and some one finds them, they might not be honest and break into the house they know you'd probably be out looking for the dog !)
Also put I'm chipped!
Gail, Ian, & 4 boys, Jakey and Scooby !!

Reassuringly, although I have heard this regularly given as a reason for not putting a (legally required) address on a dog-tag, I have never actually heard of a case when a break-in has actually happened in this way  ;)

and often you can't tell - even another vet can't always tell as some scars are so tiny

You sometimes get would-be thieves becoming friendly with you (lets face it we always like it when our dogs get attention and while I would never stop this or even think about it at the time its always a possibility) and they may even look closer at dog tags in the process.

When you live on your own (especially as a woman) you do either fear more re personal security or make sure you try to cover all bases ;) so its not just about statistics - fear of the fear is a very relevant fact in behaviour with regard to crime in all aspects of life.

and no matter what arguments people put forward to me tough I'm not changing it
