Don't want to cause trouble...
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:35:44 PM »
We did things that we now know were wrong when we got Hattie - she's not from a 'proper' breeder, she's not KC registered and she's half worker half show (at least the lady we bought her from did tell us this, although we didn't really know what it meant...) Anyway, her breeder gave us a 5 generation pedigree for Hattie and lots of the names on it come up on this board. The breeder said it didn't matter that Hattie wasn't KC registered and, as she's a pet - we will never show her and she's been speyed now so we definitely won't be breeding from her - we didn't see why it would. Now though I'd be a bit interested to know if the pedigree is true. Is there anyway of finding out? If it is correct, is it possible to register her now? Would there be any point? It wouldn't change anything for us, we certainly couldn't possibly love her any more than we do now and I don't want to cause any trouble...

Any comments, advice and expert knowledge greatfully received (as always!)

I don't think you can register your pup on the KC breed register yourself as I think only the breeder can do that (although I may be corrected) but you can register her on the Kennel Club Companion Dog register - you can even choose a "posh" registration name for her if you'd like:

No advise, but will be watching with interest  ;)
I was given Chloe's pedigree by the breeder and have never checked it  ph34r But at least she is KC registered, so I'm presuming (perhaps niavely) that she's what it says on the tin  :005: :005:
As you say, it doesn't make any difference to how much we love them though  :luv:

Although Hattie isn't KC registered you could still check the names on her pedigree to see if any of those show up. If you use this site http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/services/public/health/search/Default.aspx then enter a dog's name and on the right hand side it shows the sire and dam's results. Even if there are no results it should show you if the parentage you have is correct.

If you post up the pedigree people may be able to tell you if it's factually correct i.e. x dog mated with y bitch to produce z dog etc. although obviously nobody can say if it's actually Hattie's true breeding or not. Are either or both of her parents KC registered?

As Rachel said you can't put her on the breed register yourself but the companion register is worth considering, a lot of people with rescue dogs do this.

Thank you. This checks out with what we were given which was Sire Bitcon Fagan and Dam Mallowdale Lark, the previous generations seem to be right

How have you got on with your research?  I can see that the sire is from show stock and the dam from working stock, have you managed to back track any further?  You can also get copies of the Cocker Spaniel Club Year Book (a bit expensive at £15/£20 for the most recent copies) which are interesting and may well have relatives on the sires side and possibly the sire himself in print.

As you say, no matter, your pup will be loved whatever, but always interesting to find out their background.  I did this with my working springer so  many years ago, I now have quite an extensive knowledge of working springers (not much use to a lot of people but I find it fascinating!).

The only real unknown is whether Hattie's parents were who the 'pedigree' and breeder says they were, all the rest of it (5 generations) seems to check out
