Buying new clippers

Hello all,

With times being hard I've decided to do some DIY hair cuts in our house and was wondering if anyone could suggest a good pair of clippers.

Don't panic I'm a hairdresser so do have experience in using clippers and usually tidy up our 2 dogs in between appointments. I've found it more of a struggle financially getting them to the groomers as often so want to invest in a decent pair that will do the job and so I can do it myself.

Any help would be great.

I bought the Oster Golden A5 last year to upgrade from my more basic and old Moser Rex. I wish I hadn't bothered! Although I now have a choice of blades I find the Oster A5 uncomfortable and unwieldy to handle and changing the blades isn't the easiest. Only my personal opinion, but I'm not keen on them.

The Andis 2 speed for me to.   :D They are excellent and I use them on more than just my lot.  ;) They are also what I trained with.  :blink:

I have andis too the semi professional ones as I only do my 2 dogs (and husband!!!) every few weeks, they came with no 10 blade and I bought the 7FC to go with them, along with a good pair of scissors it cost me around £110 in total.  I have never taken them to the groomers I just looked at pictures on my breeders website and had in my mind what I wanted them to look like. I also got a grooming table so they are safe.  Its just having the confidence to give it a go but hey it grows back - and very quickly!!!

I did a one day course at a local college last Saturday it was great.  The course was for people who want to be able to groom their own dogs, you have to take a dog with you so for the cost of the course you also get your dog groomed, well you do the grooming after being shown and instructed.  Our instructor did one side of Archie and I did the other, but the instructor was always on hand to answer questions and make sure I was doing it correctly.  As a bonus I ended up having my other dog done as I had finished Archie by lunchtime and as it was a full day course I phoned my other half to bring our other dog for the afternoon, which was great as I was able to do all of her but again with the instructor checking and helping when needed.  I can't recommend the course enough.  It also covers bathing and anal glands.  The course only cost £107 and if I had sent my dogs to the groomers it would have cost me £52.  I'm now going to order the equipment and in future will be grooming my own dogs.  Going back to your question I was recommended the Andis clippers, these are they type I used and found them easy to use.

HI everyone and thanks for your replies,

I went to buy the clippers and fell in love with the feel of the Moser Switchblade. They are really easy to use and sit nice in your hand.

We've done both our boys now with very little effort so extremely pleased with our purchase.

They cost £105 and we're happy with the length of the blade so no extra cost.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
