Buffy could have died today
« on: July 03, 2009, 09:32:44 PM »
This morning we got home from our walk and the dogs all went into the kitchen for a long drink.
I got breakfast and went into the living room for my cuppa and breakfast (like I always do!)
4 of the dogs came in with me, and I didn't give a second thought to the fact that Buffy didn't come too - she often goes out in the garden for a mooch around, or lies in her bed after a good walk.
Trev and I were having our breakfast and watching GMTV ( :005:), and Dominic went into the kitchen to get his breakfast.

Unknown to us, Buffy had been trying to get something from under a shelf unit where the tins of dog food are stored, and the ring on her collar had somehow got stuck on the bottom shelf.  She was slowly strangling herself, and struggling wildly unable to get free.

Luckily she had a quick release type collar on and Dominic just clicked it off and then called us.  Poor Buffy was really panting hard and had a good long drink.  She was fine afterwards, but what a shock!!! I always take their collars off before putting them in their crates having read about accidents that can happen in them, but never thought she could get hurt just in the kitchen.

Thank Dog Dominic went out to the kitchen when he did, as it could have been another 5-10 minutes before one of us went out there.

Also, thank Dog Dominic is so sensible in an emergency - he is my little super star!
Penny,   Dexter (cavalier x poodle), Alfie (Whippet cross)  and  Maximus the cocker spaniel!!

RIP my 2 most gorgeous cocker girls - Buffy and Harriet - both waiting for me at the bridge. Joined by my beloved Josie taken too soon and Suki aged 13 :(

What a fright you must have had :'( so glad she is ok now. Belle doesn't wear a collar at all in the house but that worries me too as she isn't microchipped yet ph34r, so if she got out she could get lost with no tag. Sometimes you don't know what to do for the best do you

OMG what a fright.  I would never use a metal crate again even when I get another puppy unless it was collarless.   Indie had nearly choked on a couple of occasions with the metal crate and thankfully we've been there to rescue her, I didn't realise that she could get caught until a few months ago.    We now use a soft dog crate in the kitchen.

I know some people say not to wear a collar in the house but my worry is that she may get out and picked up with no collar - I know the risk is minimal but I'd like to know that if that ever happened she'd be identified straight way and returned to me as soon as possible.   :-\

To anyone who uses a metal crate, do not leave a collar on your dog, I've seen first hand my dog choking when she got caught and luckily I've been there to release her.

And Penny, well done Dominic  :luv: :D
