Poor Murphy!
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:03:05 PM »
My poor murphy has hurt himself this morning out on a dog walk.  He was having a lovely time, we'd only been walking for about 5 mins when he started limping slightly but he still seemed happy. Both of the boys jumped into a brook that they like to go in but Murphy couldn't pull himself out.  He started to panic and started to move away from me.  I managed to get down on my hands and knees on the bank and help him out by his collar. When he got out he couldn't put any weight on his back leg.

I put him back in the car and thought I'd see how he was and ring the vet this evening if he was still bad.  However, after about 1/2 hour of being at home, I could tell he just couldn't get comfy so I phoned the vet who said to take him straight in.

She thinks he's either damaged his hip or has some ligament damage. She's given him a painkiller injection and has given me Metacam for him for the weekend and I have to take him back on monday.  If he's still bad on monday, she will do an xray and he might have to have an operation. I feel dreadful in case I hurt him when I pulled him out but there was nothing else I could do.  :embarassed: He's now asleep in the conservatory and is feeling very sorry for himself, although just managed a half wag of the tail when I looked at him. Bless him! I've got to let him have complete rest until monday - not even let him out in the garden except for a quick toilet visit. Trouble is - the boy is my shadow and follows me everywhere. Think the housework might have to wait for today!

Oh no, poor Murphy :'(. I hope it's just a sprain or something and he recovers over the weekend :luv:. Don't feel guilty, from what you wrote it sounds as if he was already hurt before he went into the water, you did the only thing you could :-*

Sorry to hear about Murphy  :'( I do hope it is nothing too serious, and that he wont need an operation.
Don't feel bad about pulling him out of the brook - he was struggling, so you did what you had to.
Best of luck in keeping him quiet! Bit of a task eh?! :shades:
Sending positive thoughts, and {{{hugs}}} from us!

I am sorry that Murphy has hurt his leg but they have wonderful powers of recovery.

Sweep had a nasty back leg injury about a month ago.  OH thought she had broken her leg at one point - she was limping quite badly.  Vet said nasty pull/strain and an anti-immflamatory jab and some metacam. after few days of rest it was much better and now she is back to normal.

Hopefully Murphy's leg is just a strain - fingers crossed.

Thanks for all your replies.

He is very quiet and can't get comfy at the moment. I've "penned" them off in the conservatory with beds so that Murphy can have quiet time (paddy is in with him too because they are always together).  Unfortunately, Paddy keeps trying to do naughty things to murphy - keep having to tell him off! Poor Murph can't defend himself either. If it carries on then paddy will be the one penned in  :005:

Hopefully he will be ok by Monday but he isn't looking good at the moment.

Thanks again (advance warning that this will probably post in the wrong place - either I'm doing something wrong or my 'puter is playing up!)

Absolutely - you could not have left him struggling in any case, that may have done more harm. Hope the little man is feeling better soon.

Just took Murphy back to the vets because he still isn't using his back leg.  The vet is almost certain that he's damaged his cruciate ligament. He's booked in for an x-ray and op on Tuesday. He said that Murphy isn't likely to be in any pain which I was pleased about. Has anyone got any experience of this?  I forgot to ask the vet what the recovery time is for him. It's been bad enough keeping him still this weekend!  We've got pet insurance so hopefully most of it will be covered - (i hope).  I do feel less stressed about it now but just want the poor thing back to normal. He's still managing to give me lots of cuddles and has a waggy tail so doesn't seem too bothered by it.

Yes, Jarv's sister had a cruciate injury - she was on crate rest for about 6 weeks from memory - after that they checked it to see whether an op was needed which it wasn't.  She then had a lot of rehabilitation - hydrotherapy and road/lead walking to build up muscle strength.

Tis not an injury to cut corners with (ie relax on the crate rest) otherwise the problem will not go away  :shades:
