Greeting other dogs
« on: July 29, 2009, 10:16:52 AM »
How is the best way to help socialise Oscar to other dogs?

I let him greet one yesterday off lead and he went crazy with excitement jumping all over the dog. The next dog, he was on lead but he did the same thing, went crazy and was jumping up all over the dog. I am worried dogs will react with aggression to his excitement. I need to show him how to greet calmly. When can I let him off lead to play with other dogs, as at the moment he has too much energy to do this with other dogs around. He is now 14 weeks old.
Enjoying this journey !!

Hi there...now what could be more natural than a friendly greeting and an invitation to play!! He is a baby still with a lot to learn!! If he annoys other dogs they will ignore him or warn him off verbally! or better still they will join in the fun...Puppies and children are born to be exhuberant and full of life...You are a role model for your pup and have a lot to teach him...if he senses you are scared or uptight about other dogs he will sense this and become nervous...most dog owners and dogs are friendly and will let you know how their dog feels about your pups antics...or their dogs will!
If they seem aggressive they are warning him they don t want to play..but if you have time there is nothing more fun than a good old romp and chase around on the understanding that when mum wants to go ...its time to follow! hw will find a calmer attitude as he gets older...it is great that he is confident and outgoing and wants to play...find someone who has a youngster..puppy classes? and let em burn off their energy together!!!! :D

Nothing more to add except I would have him off-lead now to play.   :D

Eddie still goes crackers greeting other dogs at 22 weeks  :005: I was worried at the puppy boxing too but it is calming down a bit and when he greets an adult dog he instinctively sits in front of them now and waits to be 'invited' to play - other puppies and eager playful dogs though and he loves a good bundle! We've let him off lead to play since 12 or 13 weeks - but be careful with recall, I am struggling with it a bit around other dogs as he runs off after them and 'forgets' to come back on our call, despite puppy classes and all our work at home! Good luck and enjoy!  :luv:

We have only met 3 dogs so far, all have been rather subdued and no one wanted to play with him  :'( I am going to try going out at different times to see if I can catch more dog owners. They all congregate on our village green.
Enjoying this journey !!

try puppy class if you have one near - we went and it was great fun - 8 of them for an hour every week!

Ooh well I live 30 mins from Cambridge on the South side, near Haverhill Suffolk!

Today Oscar was off lead and was greeted by a big friendly dog. Oscar submitted to him, didn't jump and then played for a minute before the dog ran off. It was so nice to see how a good introduction can go with a dog who has energy to match or who is tolerant to puppies. Oscar just loved it!
