How do you stop whistle train?
« on: September 05, 2009, 11:26:49 AM »
My son and I took Larnie for a walk down the farm track and onto the field last night.  I call her back to me by name and treat her with chicken or livercake, but he whistled to her when he wanted her to come, and when he did she would stop in her tracks and look at him.

How would I go about making the most of this and training her to stop at a whistle command?  She is usually at a distance, so not quite sure how I would go about it.  Also where do you get the proper whistles from? (he whistled by mouth IYSWIM).  Thanks

If you do a search on this, especially on the Working and Behaviour boards you'll find a lot of threads explaining how to train the stop whistle...

You can buy whistles at country stores or online - try Black Gundog or Canine Concepts.

We use an Acme 210.5 whistle

Every time your dog sits, reinforce it with the whistle. Once they will sit with whistle alone, you can start using it at longer distances. I do mine with a hand command too (the Jedi one!!)
