Puppy Deposits!
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:02:53 PM »
Just wanted to ask wat people do with regards deposit for pups??

We usually take a deposit when they are first visited and choosen. I thought this was what most people did.
 :-\

I have been looking at puppy ads on the internet ( sorry I can't help myself!! ph34r) and there are quite a few saying they are expecting litter and are already taking deposits when pups aren't even born!!!

Would people really pay for something that didn't even exist yet???

I would never be able to take someones money without meeting them and them meeting the puppies first! Surely I am not the only one to think this??

I paid a deposit for Disney before his litter was born but his breeder only asked for something ridiculous like £5. I'm not sure if it was because I was looking for a puppy to show or if it was standard practice for her. She did say if there wasn't a suitable male in the litter that the deposit could be carried forward for a pup from a future litter.

I guess if I was waiting for a much longed for show pup from a superb mating then I would be more than willing to leave a deposit!   :005:

Fair enough but most of the ads where deposits are so often mentioned certainly aren't for show pups from superb matings - quite the opposite usually ;)

I sent in a deposit for a pup back in May without pups being born as this was what was required, and as this breeder came recommended I had no qualms, as it was stipulated that on our initial meeting if either of us wanted to back out then the deposit would be returned. Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances, I have yet to get my puppy, but have been offered my money back, but because I'm keen to have a puppy from this breeder she has kept the deposit and fingers crossed I shall be lucky very soon ;)

usually leave a deposit after you have seen your puppy ...this is the way we have always done it then vet the owners at the same time .makesure the puppy is going to suitable family.

I would have thought a responsible breeder would want to meet you and vet you before considering letting you have one of their pups and leaving a deposit. I have left deposits for both of my girls and this has been after being vetted by the breeder both on the phone/e-mail and then in person and then on me seeing the pups, mum, health certs etc. I have had no issues with leaving a deposit if asked for and the circumstances are right for both myself and the breeder.
I would not pay money to be put on a waiting list as I would feel that the breeder is more concerned about making money and not the little lives that are due into the world.

Totally agree with the above.  I think it is essential that the Breeder and potential new Owner meet up for discussions etc before any decisions are made.  I don't like the idea of sending a deposit for a puppy.

Im looking for a working pup and a lot of breeders want a deposit to put you on a waiting list.they say they will put you on the waiting list without a deposit but people who have paid a deposit get priority of choice.

a good breeder  should be interested in you seeing you vetting you not just grabbing a deposit before there even born .keep peoples details once born ring to veiw then go from there ...dont like the idea of someone taking your money before the pups are even born looks like they are only interested in the money not the welfare of the dog .

IMHO a 'good' breeder shouldn't need to advertise on puppy selling websites anyway  :-\
