No puppies
« on: November 02, 2009, 10:07:26 AM »
Well we finally decided to go ahead and have the scan on Molly and contacted a guy with a  mobile scanner. Five minutes and thirty pounds later we were told there was nothing there. Oh well better luck next time, I just hope they are accurate and we don't have any little suprises in a few weeks :o

Mark, can I just mention a golden retriever breeder friend of mine had the same and a few weeks later she came downstairs to find a puppy with mum looking very pleased with herself.

She was 31 days at the scan so not quite the 35 but he was very positive. I have to say we are still keeping a close eye on her for any changes and that seems the sensible thing to do especially what you've just said Eve.

Then the scan may be right. usually by 4 weeks you will see a "egg white consistency" discharge coming from vulva which is a pretty good indication that a pregnancy is there.

Thanks for that. Looking at all the signs or lack of them I'd have to say I agree with the scan.

Thats a shame. I bet you are disappointed. The scans are usually pretty accurate although it does depend on the experience of the person doing the scanning. I would take her back in 2 weeks just to be 100% sure.

Has there been any change in her behaviour?  Are her teats enlarged?  How many times was she mated?  Did you do anything to know if it was the 'right time' for her to be mated? I believe there is an ovulation test  :-\  When Jo Jo was mated, i was advised to check from about day 7 onwards to see if the bleed had gone a pinky/yellowy colour, which basically just means dabbing some white kitchen roll in her ladies area.  Oh, just thought of another thing, is the stud dog proven?  sorry for all the questions, just thought it may help.  :-\

I am certainly no expert but i would have thought that 31 days is a bit too early for a scan  :dunno:

It still could be possible that she is pregnant.  :-\

I have noticed a change in her behaviour for a few weeks now. She is hungrier than usual, almost obsessive about food. She is really hanging back on walks and seems generally tired. No physical signs though, although my wife seems to think shes a bit saggy around the teats. We didn't do anything to see if her time was right other than taking her every day for about 10 days. They only mated once and he is proven. I think we need a physical sign for me to be convinced but we'll keep monitoring her.

If she is pregnant, by week 6 you would be able to see a change/increase in her size.  You could also take her for a check up at the vets, say early next week.  Our vet could feel Jo Jo was having pups at just over 5 weeks into hers.   If she is hanging back on walks and seems tired it does sound exactly the same as Jo Jo too.

Her nipples nearest her back end will become much bigger, they will both widen out and grow in size, they all will, but these will be the most noticable.

Mine had 11 pups each and they were huge in size from 5 weeks onwards and they also lacked energy when walking, even Phoebe who's a real live wire. Penny's appetite remained good throughout her pregnancy but she did have "morning sickness" and did go off food temporarily around 3 weeks after mating. Phoebe's appetite took a real nose dive and she was also sick. I struggled to get her to eat anything throughout her pregnancy from 3 weeks onwards.

A friends dog was also mated around the same time, this one had had 2 or 3 failed matings beforehand and the stud dog owner had basically told him if it didn't work this time get her speyed. She had 10 pups and her activity levels remained high throughout her pregnancy (she is a working springer), she was able to do a lot more than mine. The same owner on a previous mating was convinced she was pregnant as she seemed to do all the things you'd expect to happen, even getting bigger. He took her to the vets at 9 weeks only to be told there wasn't a pregnancy.

It's important to remember that most of the signs of pregnancy can be seen in bitches who are NOT actually pregnant but experiencing a phantom pregnancy eg changes in appetite, behaviour, changes in apparance of teats etc. About the only sign that is present during pregnancy but not during a phantom is the egg white type opaque discharge Karen mentioned above. You can usually see this quite clearly from 5 weeks onwards and if it's not there, you can be pretty sure it's a phantom.

If proved she isn't pregnant, you could use this time to evaluate what needs to be done to ensure safety and success next time.

Continue to read up about pregnancy, ensure you have all equipment at the ready, get in touch with breeder or someone with knowledge of pregnancies to help as mentor, and ensure that she is vet checked and fit for pregnancy, KC BVA eye tested  with clear results and has also had DNA tests for FN and Prcd PRA to be aware of status and ultimately preventing any pups being affected with these conditions. Also look into canine herpes jabs and pre mate testing.

I scan my girls at 21 days and if pregnant can always pick up pups, so I would say at 31 days if there were pups there you would definitely see them.
