Hollys been to the vets -Cataracts

My son visited us last night and was playing with Holly when he asked what she had got on her eye.Depending on where the light was when you looked at the eye you could see what appeared to be a small blue disc.Although I groom Holly every dayI had not noticed it before.As she goes down the ditches & through bushes with her sister after rabbits,I thought she may have injured it.So this morning I took her to my vets to have the eye checked out.We saw the main vet and when she looked at it said it looked like a cataract and that she would put me on her list to see the eye specialist from Cambridge vet school to see Holly with some other dogs at our vet practise.The vet is not sure what is going on as it is only in one eye,the other is perfectly clear.I own her mum Bella who is PRA & FN clear,Goniodysgenesis clear and has just had her latest yearly eye test which was clear,so it has come as a very big shock,especially as Holly is only just a year old   - so I am now going to have to wait for my appointment and hope that it is nothing to drastic

Marley was diagnosed with a cataract a few months ago- i know it came as a shock as i really hadn't spotted it and he's only 3 - it's something i have always tended to associate with older dogs. At the time, the vet talked about diabetes as cataracts can be a symptom of this disease. However, a simple pin prick of blood confirmed Marley doesn't have diabetes.
We then saw an eye specialist within a few weeks who confirmed he had a significant cataract in one eye. The other eye, like Holly's,  is perfectly clear. Although the specialist is not completely sure of the cause, she thinks it's most likely that it has occurred through injury at some point - she even said it's possible that it could have been caused by an injury whilst in the womb. We are due to go back and see her later this month and possibly look at a date for surgery.

Dylan has recently been diagnosed with PRA and has a cataract in his left eye  We went to the Royal Vet School at Cambridge and saw David Williams the eye specialist there.  He is excellent, but unfortunately there is nothing they can do for Dylan and he will lose his site he is 8yrs old.

This is interesting as I have a cataract caused by injury - a head injury when I was only 20 years old.  It can happen to humans as well as dogs!  I'm sorry to hear about Holly, Dylan and Marley and hope the vets can help them.

So sorry to hear about Holly having a cataract & hope the specialist is able to help 

Purdey was found to have a non- progressive cateract in one eye (caused by a possible trauma when younger  ) & neuclear sclerosis of both eyes (agrivated by her having dry eye) I, like your son only noticed something wrong when she looked up at a bright light.

My regular vets diagnosis, was much more serious than that of the specialist, when we were referred .....so hope that this is the case for Holly too  .............good luck & let us know how she gets on
